I get the error when I attempt to flash the system image in fastboot. It appears to not overwrite the current system.  xt1080M, dev edition unlocked bootloader. I was fastbooting back to stock 12.15.15 in anticipation of taking the KK OTA

You need to use moto fastboot. I used house of moto to flash back to stock without wiping data and it worked just fine.

I am using moto fastboot. I've flashed back to stock before without an issue..until last night when this popped up. It's very odd and I'm not sure what exactly it means.  Phone still boots like it should but it just doesn't seem to be overwriting the system partition.

on a side note I flashed back to the 12.7.7 firmware, got the same error, and let it take the update to 12.15.15 without an issue.
