Just To Be Clear On Root

Best Answer johnthehillbilly , 22 December 2013 - 12:34 PM

The easy answer..... Anything ABOVE 9.16 cannot be unlocked...... 9.30.1(9.18.94) cannot be rooted or unlocked..... There are root method(s) for anything UNDER 9.30.1(9.18.94) Go to the full post

Thanks to this forum for root, I am coming from a razr maxx and will be receiving a new maxx hd in a few days. I have read just about every thread on rooting the maxx hd but want to be sure on the software version I need to root and unlock the boot loader. I have seen version 9.18.94, 9.18.79, 9.16.(?), and 9.20.(?). I don't remember the last numbers on some of those.

Which version should I look for and build date to:

Root Only

or

Root + unlock boot loader

I do see that 9.30 is unlockable and unrootable, I am hoping it has been laying on a shelf for a while. Will suck if it comes with 9.30

Thanks

Thanks for the quick answer GearJammin.

As a follow up question, who has received a new maxx hd lately? What version did it come with?

There actually have been several people recently that have, one way or the other, received the HD......We have seen just about all the system version(s) ..... Its basically a "crap shoot" on if they "grab" an updated one or not before shipping it out to you

I bought a Black Friday Razr HD in Stealth Black (not Maxx) and it came with version 9.20.1 and was rooted and updates frozen within minutes of un-boxing. Good luck.

I sure am hoping it comes with a rootable software version. I have a lot of root programs on my maxx and don't want to loose them.

That would be great. Unlocked means rooted kitkat.

Got new phone. Came with 9.20.1. For some reason, it will not root. Tried motochopper and droid razr utility 1.21. It installs and says completed, but I get an error when updating SuperSu binary. Says SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem.

I'll keep working at it.

I used Matt's utility to root my xt926 on 9.20.1.

Couldn't get it to work using Matt's utility. But I got it rooted using the other directions.

Doesn't the bootloader need to be unlocked to install recovery?

Yes. TWRP and CWM are for unlocked devices. The best he will be able to do is Safestrap. Good catch. :)

I would recommend using the latest RageHD ROM. It works with TWRP and CWM  (for those of us with unlocked BLs) and Safestrap recoveries, so those with locked bootloaders can still flash what is one of the best stock-based ROMs out there. They remove as much bloat as possible and really customize it well.

I tried the latest RageHD with a Safestrap install and it was slow and had a ton of lag. Not smooth at all so I uninstalled it. I will probably try again to see what's up.

Then I installed Blurry HD v1.2 and absolutely love it. Super smooth, fast and clean. Gonna keep her for a while.
