Back in #77, I relayed my dilemma, and I got it figured. Basically, a bunch of mistakes; forgot to delete the saved root, trial-switched safestraps without uninstalling recovery, and later without deleting the file on internal SD card. Also, I had some bad ROM zips downloaded. What took me so long was that I had to realize each mistake individually. UGH! Well, I'm back to modded blur (Aviator) in stock, trimmed stock games-for-kids (keeps 'em outta my main ROM!) in another, AOKP and a CM ROM 'share' another slot -- each fully set up. I also have the updated stock saved on the side. My Maxx is packing a 32Gb card. fat-fingered and Maxx-ed out. Whoops, spoke too soon. Looks like you can install a .165 onto a .16 occupied slot, but not the other way 'round. Prob'ly get a told-you-so from the uber geeks here, but can't swap ROMs in a slot...even 'kissing cousin' ROMs. Strange that AOKP and a KK Cyanogen do fine.

You have to use tibu to freeze the updater apk. I believe it's called blur updater or something like that. If the updated was already downloaded you can use a file explorer to go to system then cache folder and it will be there. Just delete it

I had to fastboot back to the .165 release because my phone had become horribly slow, and because I couldn't get Titanium Backup to restore some files I had deleted. Now I want to take this update, but when I check for it, it tells me my system is up to date. So I'd like to install it manually, but I want to keep the phone stock and not install Safestrap or a custom recovery. Is there a way to do that?

Get the FXZ:

Grab my FXZ Script Generator:

Extract the FXZ.  Copy the jar file into the extracted FXZ folder (at the same place you find boot.img).  The jar file is an executable jar, so, just run it (make sure you have java installed, obviously).  Press the ... button and select the FXZ's xml file.  Then press the generate button.  You'll see some new XML files added to your FXZ.  Use RSD to flash the KEEP DATA xml file.  This will upgrade you and not blow away your data partition.  You will need to re-root.  You can try this:

I don't understand. I have the update file from the first post in this thread. It isn't an FXZ file. It doesn't have a .jar file in it. It's only about 5.8Mb. The FXZ files you linked to are 600Mb+ updates.

You're right, it's not.  But you also said it's not working.  I provided a way to get the update to install no matter what is on your phone.  You could try to figure out the reason the OTA is failing and fix it if you so desire, but, IMO that's just a lot of wasted time and effort.  Up to you on how you want to do it.

If you want to take the OTA from the OP, you can attempt to stick it on your sdcard, boot into recovery manually, and install it that way.  It might work.

Just an FYI - Most current FXZ's are also posted

This worked. The OTA wasn't failing, it simply wasn't available when the phone looked for it. It's been so long since I've used the factory recovery that I forgot it could flash things this way. So, thanks.

I can confirm that I had no issue installing and keeping root with RootKeeper.

A little late to the party --- and my first post ---- but I can confirm this as well. :)

Rather than usurping an update, you can flash the fxz with a save data. The update files are hard to find for older devices.
