I know there's the method of adding a line at the bottom of build.prop in the system file, but that makes me lose my notification bar as well, and makes systemui crash showing a popup every time I turn the phone on. I've tried a couple apps from the play store and have the same results, lose both navbar and notification bar. Has anyone successfully removed the navbar without the notification bar on this device? I am rooted with a locked boot loader (bleh).

Look up XPosed Framework, there are several modules that should do what you want, plus adding pie.

Tried xposed with gravity box module. It still removes notification bar along with navbar on my hd maxx.... Any other solutions besides running a KK ROM with it built in? Also tried the same apps as the OP and same results.

I got it!

Ultimate dynamic navbar pro on the play store (the lite version may work, less customization):

Used in conjunction with xposed. You need to enable it's xposed module. Reboot, done!

Notification bar showing, navbar hidden. Swipe or tap trigger area and navbar appears.
