Yes you read that right! Motorola has FINALLY released their bootloader unlock tool!!

From AndroidPolice.com

Well, well, well, looky at what Motorola has done today: it released the long-awaited, often-promised bootloader unlock tool! Unfortunately, the site doesn't appear to be finished just yet, as some of the more important parts - such as FAQ and Supported Devices list - are currently kicking back a "permission denied" error. Boo!

What we can see, however, is how the process works. For starters, you'll need fastboot and the Android SDK installed before you start the unlock process. And of course, the site is laced with warnings and disclaimers that the process will void the warranty, yada yada yada. We know the drill, Motorola.
While the supported devices list is null at the moment, While the Photon Q is the only device listed at the moment, we don't expect this service to be backwards compatible with existing devices (though it may be - there hasn't been official word at this point). With that said, we already know the

, and all devices moving forward should also have the feature.

Here's the link to get started!

I was able to get as far as seeing what must be done to unlock the device. I don't have a Razr right now so I can't test.

Someone with a razr and fastboot setup, boot into fastboot and try typing fastboot oem get_unlock_data

This should populate a list of 5 codes. You are then supposed to copy and paste the codes and see if the number is eligible for unlock. I hope Moto updated the bootloader so that we can at least get the codes to pop up.

Can anyone try this?

If you go to the moto link and click on "supported devices" nothing is listed.

But yes, keep in mind that this might not be backwards compatible.

Seeing as how the devices are locked in factory to one type of bootloader (hs or ns) by eFuse, there is no way this unlocking tool will support the OMAP4 devices. The devices weren't made to support the commands the tool uses regardless.

I like even more how Moto is finally putting the blame on the carriers :) They called out AT&T on the lack of unlock for the Atrix HD.

Moto needs to give up on blaming VZW or AT&T because htc has provided an unlock tool for all their devices, regardless of carrier.

Moto: We all KNOW without a doubt you're reading this....give up the farce and give in. We promise it won't hurt...at least for the most part.

So, obviously, warranties are now void, but what if you have best buy black tie protection? Pretty much covers everything except submersion into liquid. Will that be covered?

I'm really hoping a Dev can rip whatever method they use to unlock the bootloader and find a way to reverse it so that we won't have to register our phones. that would suck if you unlocked your bootloader and the next day your screen turns off magically due to build quality.

Have you noticed how Verizon markets Motorola products like crazy but not HTC? Now you have your answer why Motorola lets the carrier dictate what phones are unlocked.

I can't officially answer for all Best Buy but at my store, it would be covered. We;d just send it off like any other hardware/software issue. Its more of a case by case basis with bootloader issues and in part depends on who you talk to. Just go in and play dumb about what happened and they should take care of you ;). Honestly though, you're not likely going to have any issues flashing that can't be recovered, as far as ROMs and stuff are concerned. Moreover we still have no proof VZW/Moto will ever allow older devices to be unlocked, AKA kexec is still our best option.
