I would like to be able to change the default install location for downloaded apps. It seems silly that when the minuscule application storage section becomes full that I can't use the internal storage of ext sd.

So, how can this be done?

[I found a method on google that requires me to install the android sdk. I'd rather avoid this method if possible.]

If you are coming from a clean system, or better yet a clean slate you could just update the partition locations/sym links to put /data wherever you wanted. Can definitely be done via the SDK, but you might be able to do it via a recovery flashable method.

Can you elaborate more specifically on how to do this?
