ok this is probably a stupid question but my razr maxx HD is locked and rooted. i tried to kit kat OTA and it failed and I came here. my question is:

1) If you are locked, you must NOT have taken the update already or this WILL brick you.

does this mean since I tried the OTA and it failed I can't use this method? the OTA would download, then get through 25% of installation then fail because phone is rooted and some stuff is changed around i assume. Just want to know if I can still try this method.

What he is referring to are those who have successfully updated to 4.4.2 on a locked device.  Since your's was unsuccessful, you will be ok as long as you have rebooted into the firmware you were in before you tried to update.  Yes, root will cause it to fail as this update specifically looks at a file that gets modified for rooting.

It's unlikely that it flashed anything.  There is a risk, but, it's a small one.  You should be able to use this method to clean it up on 9.30.1 and install the OTA.

Alright unlocked beotches, you'll notice the OP is updated with new root instructions.  I've updated my unlocked root program with all the latest toys so you can install CWM and sideload SuperSU once you complete the OTA.  Enjoy.

Hello,

My device is in a boot loop from trying to sideload the upgrade (in Germany). I followed your steps but RSD lite does not show my device. Possible this is because my laptop ONLY has USB3 ports? I have a moto cable. Second issue is since my phone has been boot looping I now have a low battery. Any hints on how to bring the charge up on a device in this state?

If its boot looping into a "normal" boot and not fastboot mode then it should charge via a wall charger....... Yes the USB 3.0 could be 100% of the problem..... You Ned access to a rig with 2.0 USB .....

Did you verify the md5 of the update on your sdcard like the instructions say?  Did it match?

It's not getting that far.  It's saying the OTA zip is invalid.

It will NOT install on a rooted device. Period. The update looks at the install-recovery.sh file and if it is not stock it aborts. Installing SU modifies that file. Edit - as long as you perform the fxz step this will not be a concern. Sent from my S-Offed One M8

You did have SafeStrap install. Did you uninstall it properly through the app and reboot the device to insure it was gone. You can go as far as uninstalling the app as well, just something I had a force of habit to do. Also make sure that the install-recovery.sh file is not modified in the stock slot to gain init.d support. You might want to check system/recovery-from-boot.p also and make sure that it doesn't look like this recovery-from-boot.p.bak. Being a locked device that really doesn't apply but the update will check for that as well.

Thanks to SamuriHL for laying out all the steps as well as links to all the files/tools needed. Also thanks to vakharia from a n00b, without those additional instructions I would have been stuck not knowing how to get back into recovery from the red triangle with android laying down!

I'm not tech savvy at all but I'm here for help.

A long time ago I rooted my phone but I'm pretty sure I lost root along the way bc of OTA updates.  I know that when I tried tethering, the superuser prompt would come up but it never worked after one of the updates.

Fast forward to today, I hit install on the OTA update, and now my phone is stuck at the red M logo and won't boot.  What should I do?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

I checked the MD5 and it is the same, I uninstalled safestrap and gravity box and xposed.

Could not locate the system /recovery file you mentioned.

Still no joy, phone seems to be stock , all blur bloat and no root.
