Just curious about everyone else's experiences with KK thus far. Have noticed 2 things that are starting to drive me nuts.

1. The message indicator built into circles is constantly not resetting. Have to go to it numerous times for it to reset from new message.

2. When changing the volume for the ringer the sound is distorted as if its a blown speaker. Doesn't sound this way when it actually rings or when playing music. Very odd.

Good things...

Night and day difference in speed. So much faster now. No lag or freeze ups

Battery life slightly less but is negligible. Display seems to eat more than before.

All apps work well except for Kindle. Constantly getting an error that it has stopped working. I never use it so I could care less.

What are other peoples experiences ?

I found that many of the little issues go away with an fdr and many will come back of you restore a data backup after. Keep in mind that jumping from 4.1.2 straight to 4.4.2 skips a few builds, so you should expect some app data issues. As for the power usage and screen, I'm not positive, but I think the auto brightness is set just a notch brighter than before, but I could be wrong.

FDR is as it sounds - factory data reset. it resets your phone by wiping all settings as well as the internal storage, including the internal SD card. However, it's the sure-fire way to ensure the phone is reset back to it's factory settings which usually clears up a lot of issues when upgrading like this phone just did. Going from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2 is quite a leap as there were a lot of architectural changes done to the Android OS.

The best thing to do is backup your internal SD card as well as any other information you want. I'm rooted, so I use Titanium Backup to backup to my external SD card (you have to put in the "patch" that allows apps to have full write access to the external SD card first) and then I backup my apps and their data there.

Then, I go and do a FDR which wipes my phone clean and I have to reactivate it, set up my Google account, etc and then I install Titanium Backup and start restoring apps.

But, usually, when things are not working correctly (radios, apps, etc), an FDR is what clears it up.

I noticed the following both before and after FDR:

1.  If you cycle through the vibration patterns (Settings>Sound>Phone Vibration Pattern) a few times the phone no longer vibrates.  If I subsequently receive an incoming call I do not receive a vibration alert even though the notification bar shows that the device is in vibrate mode.

2.  Visual voicemail will no longer display the caller name from your phone book if the entry is stored with a *82 prefix (and I presume any other prefix).  The Recent call list works but they managed to somehow break VVM.

The device is much more responsive, as mentioned, and I have been experiencing better battery performance after the update.

I've got my HD updated with KitKat right when I got it, however I had it on the M

I'm loving the fact that I can remove all the applications that I don't like without root, that was my intention with root but now I don't need it. I love the new transparency effects. The battery is so much better then the M, but it takes awhile to charge. That most likely is with the HD though. Its running a lot smoother then with 4.1.2. That also might be because I'm running a custom launcher but its running amazing so far. I expected more from the battery but that might just be because I bought it used, whatever

Oh, and the new lockscreen is so much better.

Are you on Verizon and do you have unlimited data or are you on a tiered data plan? If you are on a tiered data plan (2gb/month, 4gb/month, etc), then tethering is free. It's not free only if you are on the unlimited data plan. Again, this is for Verizon.

Nope. Without root, you don't have any hope I believe of getting tethering to work at this time.

I haven't had the sound issue, but I also haven't messed with anything in that respect. I noticed a major reduction in battery life, though. I work in an environment where I can't have my phone (MAXX HD) on me, and over the course of about 12 hours, the battery would be fine at maybe 20-30%, depending on how much I used it during my quick breaks. After the update, it was down to 1% with minimal use! After looking at the battery use menu, I was shocked to see the OS using more than the screen, and by a decent amount! (Current: 87% battery, 2h 15m 48s with minimal use and after a full charge. Would normally have ~95%.)

If anyone has ideas to reduce power drain, please advise. Thanks for any suggestions, and for anyone reading to see about updating: remember all devices are different due to use and installed apps. Your experience will vary.

Not sure which forum RAZR HD falls in but I just wanted to document the problems I've had with KitKat on my RAZR HD and M since the 5/22/14 upgrade from JellyBean (which I liked).  I chose my HD because I did not like the Mini User Interface on my wife's phone (in addition to wanting a larger screen and an SDHC slot).  I now have that same interface with less flexibility.

1)  Reduction in 4G and WIFI signal strength verified with a replacement JellyBean RAZR HD sitting next to my KitKat RAZR HD.  JellyBean was getting 2-3 bars 4G.  KitKat was fluctuating between 3G and 1X.  WIFI signal strength from my NightHawk router - full strength with JellyBean, down one level with KitKat.

2)  Battery life is roughly 30% reduced with KitKat as observed at end of work day.  There are now days when I have to attach the vehicle charger on the way home from work.  In the 5 months previous, I had never used the car charger. Keep in mind that my phone sits in a cabinet outside of my office location so it is always in the same place as I can not bring my phone into my office building.

3)   Prior to update, during a call if I had my phone up to my ear, the buttons would go to black screen so there was no accidental DTMF tones generated until I pulled the phone away from my ear.  Now the buttons, though not always visible, are receptive to pressure from ear or cheek.  As a result, I've had ridiculous DTMF strings attached to my voicemail PIN and when dialing a recent number have international codes prepended to the sequence.  Absurd.

4)  I used to be able to highlight a phone number in Chrome or Firefox and have the phone dial it.  No more.  Tapping a phone number results in no action.

5)  OS now views SDHC card as extension of core memory and populates with folders - in other words, I no longer have control about where the OS puts photos or music.  The OS now uses the SDHC card for Android, LostDir, and DCIM directories at a minimum.  Deleting those folders is only temporary.

6)  Every notifier clicks at the start.  If I get a text, I get click-notifier.  If I get an email, I get click-notifier.  If I shut the phone off and re-power, i get click-DROID on boot.  If the alarm goes off I get click-alarm. The clicks are loud and annoying.  I've tried disabling sound effects to no avail.  This has been a known problem to Motorola according to xda-developers forum.

7)  The white/gray text screen is impossible to read outdoors as are the gray icons on the top of the display.   It can not be changed and is particularly hard on

folks that need to see a distinct difference or if you have an Otter cover on for instance.  The text is simply unreadable.

8)  There are known bluetooth problems with certain vehicles since the upgrade.  Mine were non-functional after upgrade.  After re-installing, contacts would not transfer to Audi MMI.  (Others have reported Ford, BMW, Hyundai, Acura as well but it does not seem to be every phone).

9)  802.11n still is not compatible with Realtek wireless devices (still have to set the computer to b/g or hotspot will not work).  Realtek is a popular wireless device in many computers.  Motorola has been aware of this problem.

10)  Multiple displays overlayed on each other, i.e. exit Comcast app and you get both that and your main display showing at the same time.

11)  Circle displays are delayed when screen is painting - screen performance is visually slower.

12)  Emoticon button replaces Enter button on texts - I don't need or want a kids phone to send smiley faces.

13)  I now have two set-up apps running at times.

14)  Disabled apps re-enable themselves.

15)  No letter tabs on Contact list.  Have to now scroll through entire list.

16)  Clear cache procedures have changed - even Motorola Tier 2 did not know the correct procedure (3 calls).

17)  Having to do a factory reset after upgrade in order to regain any features or performance (as suggested by both Motorola and Verizon tech support) is unacceptable.  That is akin to doing a clean install of Windows on your PC when Microsoft issues a new Service Pack or OS.  I can accept that for a computer, but not for a cell phone.

18)  Motorola Migrate utility does not work with RAZR HD according to Motorola Tier 2.

19)  Verizon store rep suggested I root my phone to correct some of the problems.

In 30+ years in telecom and IT, this the worst upgrade I have ever seen.  It changed the character of a phone I liked to one I dislike intensely and have no desire to keep.  Changing the UI drastically is pathetic.  I've now got a replacement phone with JB 4.1.2 on it.  The challenge will be to keep it from updating!

There seems to be a known bug with Fast Dormancy, that causes an enormous battery drain, black screens and phone reboots if you are on a GSM network.

article you can read that Motorola seems to be aware of that, but explains it that their phones are guaranteed to work only in certain areas of the world. Well, yeah, thanks, Moto.
