Hi, apps like googlemaps and youtube are eating ram in the background and I want to prevent this from happening. of course I can simply freeze the apps but I still want to use them, just want that they REALLY close when I don't use them. How can I achieve this?

I think GMaps provides GPS data for other apps....could be very wrong though. It's just that preventing it from running could have side effects.

Also, are you having issues with RAM? Like multi-tasking, apps crashing, etc? RAM usage <> battery usage so honestly it's likely something you don't have to worry about.

Yes, since ICS there is about 120-170mb ram left, an Also d it responds very sluggish compared to GB at times. i froze many apps and now things are better, but still i just want to optimize speed. Also sometimes when I start an app, before it enters the app screen it shows a message that the app has just stopped working. just 1% of the times but still annoying.

Do you experience speed probz with ics?

Another reason, I find it repulsive that maps will be tracking my location all times, even when I close down maps.

Nope, no speed issues. And I didn't mean it's constantly tracking you. But if another app needs your location, like weather or w/e, I believe it calls Maps to provide the info. So if you're preventing it from running, you're preventing other apps from gaining access to your location. Again, could be wrong. Although I do know that just because it's utilizing RAM it's not necessarily running and slowing your phone down. Android isn't like windows.

Ah I understood u, just brought the tracking thing as separate issue. hmm could be true. Speaking of which, I use The Weather Channel as weather app. but maybe you can identify something odd here?

I suspect google from backing up system files from my old razr, which was acting similarly, because i installed a crooked alpha of ICS back on the old one.

Thought about flashing an ICS ROM? Arctic HD is a solid one that is very smooth and soft on the battery. Doesn't sound like there's really a problem. Normal operation. There is no way to stop maps from running other than freezing it. You should be able to FC it and turn location services off. That might prevent it from opening or delay it.

If I'm right about other apps needing Maps as soon as he runs the weather channel it'll just run Maps again. Which is why task killers and what not is bad. Maps just sitting there really isn't doing anything negative, but if you're killing it, everytime you run something like the weather channel maps needs to re-initialize and all that adding lag to your experience.

Sorry I have an XT912 so I wouldn't be able to pick out anything funky on an XT910. Hopefully someone with an XT910 will swing by and help out.

Yes, I have been looking for a proper one this afternoon, couldn't find something reliable enough so far. Thanks for the tip! I'll give arctic HD a spin, cwm'd my razr anyways. do you have any other recommendations in case it wouldn't suit my needs? doesn't need to be funky, my ideal thing would be just a bloatless stock with similar looks. A plus would be if I could use the power button as photo button.

You could flash a debloated ICS ROM if u wanted to.. You can just as easily download titanium backup and delete what you don't want also. Not sure what you mean when you say you haven't found anything reliable. There is a lot of reliable stuff on this site. Sent from my XT912 using Tapatalk 2

Thanks guys! I'm happy with the arctic. smoother than original and I have the feeling battery life is better as well. also 320 ram free on average now, and the gallery is really smooth now.

There's just a few significant flaws:
- Quickoffice is lost in arctic [EDIT: just copied teh APK from the backup cwm tar file and installed it.]
- Can't update google apps (I hear you can installl inverted color google apps so I'll have a look into that)

Some less significant but remarkable things:
- Default alarm clock doesn't work because choosing music happens on basis of 'my music' which is removed in the arctic
- SMS relies on some app called tweakker, which I think is pretty weird, since sms doesn't work if you freeze that app (I already got internet settings from sms from my provider so no point in that app).

Ah. I thought I shouldn't thrust any ICS rom from before september since the ICS ota in europe was in september. With the arctic, I'm actually running a build from before my initial telephone build date (june, my phone was apparently built in july and had GB running on it) and just works well! prejudice gone :)
