182 can root for sure. Unlock will either work or fail but will not brick. It's only calling a built in function to perform the unlock using a hole in the tz partition. It's not flashing anything so no risk of a brick. Once unlocked you can flash anything you want with a universal script.

Yeah but has anyone tried it? I don't want to risk it

There isn't a risk of bricking. It will work or fail. It's not flashing anything.

Both root and unlock are apps. Root will install the su binary to system. Unlock will acquire root and attempt to run the unlock function. If the tz partition is vulnerable, it will unlock. If it's not, it'll do nothing. But you'll have root either way.

Yeah but what about future updates? I don't think I can literally just remove root

Why not?  SuperSU has an unroot option.  If you do stuff with root, well, you'd have to undo whatever you do. But root itself can be removed quite easily.

I guess I'll try it when I get home. I'm just paranoid because of my previous attempts

Your "previous attempts" were flashing an FXZ with a low battery state.  That's not nearly the same thing as running 2 apps.

yeah well that, flashing on safe strap and accidentally flashing over the stock ROM slot, attempting to unlock my bootloader while unaware that I'm not on the correct firmware, and other stuff
