Hey all, I'm relatively new to the Android ROM scene, but definitely think I'm knowledgable with technology and I'm completely lost on this...

I flashed back to JB STOCK, and wouldn't boot - Got hung on the boot animation. Did another flash but with a full wipe (have everything totally backed up, not a big deal) and it booted up. Went into the recovery and touch didn't work. No problem, got one version back of TWRP and flashed it, worked fine. Downloaded Carbon ROM and the latest signed GApps. Wiped all partitions except for SD card, flashed the ROM then GApps, hangs on bootloader. Cleaned cache, same thing. Retried it all, same thing. I then downloaded a CM11 snapshot and tried it, and the same results as Carbon.

Interestingly, the boot logo never changed, it remained the default Motorola unlocked warning. I now flashed back to KK and went back to the Google play edition (which DID change the boot logo), and restored a backup. I haven't a clue what I could be doing wrong. Any ideas at all?

You're not doing anything wrong.

We've discovered downgrading requires a data wipe to work.

None of the roms are updated for the moto KK kernel yet. Same with CM11 although I think there is a beta CM11 from Dhacker that is working.

Hang loose...

But even after I downgraded and a full wipe, onto the old kernel, none would boot! That was the confusing part. I tried the beta CM11 on the new KK bootloader, and it didn't work, so that's why I decided to flash back to JB to get the old kernel back.

I can wait for the new ROMs to use the 3.4 kernel, but it's just confusing me why even after going back to the old kernel, why it isn't taking.

Thanks for the help :)

Like I said in the other thread, I am having the exact same problem. Can't flash any custom ROMS. That is the reason I did this whole bootloader unlock in the first place.

Couple things at work here. With the update to KK and the new root unlock it's gonna take a bit for Roms to catch up.

The other thing is with this being an older phone a bunch of users and Devs may have moved on. Especially when the original unlock was patched quite a while ago.

Like I said early everyone has to hang loose for a bit.

However it would be good for all of you to post your trials and errors in one place (this thread?) so everyone can work together to move it forward for everyone.

Has anyone got a custom ROM to stick in the 9.30.1 downgrade? Or on KitKat?

Sounds good to me!

The other thing to consider is that the partitions have been changed in KK.  And you can't downgrade GPT.  I don't know if that is having an effect.

Recovery flashed very quick, like too quick and I think it failed to write something (data?).

Don't know. I haven't a clue if there's a log in custom recovery when asking but that would be useful. If the partition size change is the problem though there's not much you can do about it except wait for the kk roms to become more stable.

I did notice while flashing back that fastboot warned me about the GPT partition, but you would think that the ROM would throw an error if there was a mismatch or something along those lines.

What I did do:

  • Complete wipe of the device, with the exception of the SD card.
  • Tried TWRP versions 2.5.0.0, 2.7.0.0, 2.7.1.0
  • After bootloop, cleared cache and galvik multiple times.
  • Tried flashing without GApps.
  • Tried wiping device completely, restarting, wiping cache/galvik, flash ROM.

None of those worked... let's create a comprehensive list of the dids and didn'ts - we'll probably have to wait it out until more ROMs support 3.4 kernels, but maybe it's just something simple we're missing.

I'm just gonna wait for a stable rom. Don't want to waste time going back and forth with buggy ones.

Has anyone been able to successfully run CM11 test build on the KK kernel?

yes I ran it just for a few hours. can't really remember anything remarkable. I know WiFi worked but didn't have time to put it through its paces.

There's already a new one as of last night. Works for both the HD and M I think.

GummyROM now works on the new kitkat bootloader.

I successfully flashed the 6/24 build of CM11 on the new kitkat bootloader. Restored back to stock due some weird issue with my contacts syncing. It synced my contacts from ~4 years ago and none of the current ones. Probably a simple setting but I didn't have time to figure it out.

Gummy 6/24 is running smooth, although no MP3 playback yet. Wifi seems stable so far.
