Every time I reboot using CWM and select “YES - Disable recvoery flash” and  select “YES - fix /system/xbin/su”, it kills root and I have to rerun TowelRoot.  Then guess what? The prompt apopears *again*. I think it thinks the permissions are incorrect when they aren’t. Huh?

What recovery did you flash to your maxx?  There is a link in the op that directs you to Dhacker29's cmw recovery for kitkat.  Search for CWM6049-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.img

That works great on my Maxx Hd.

I have had zero problem with that flash.  I did have to reset the Delvak cache after the update completed.  But everything works well.  Doing a backup with it right now infact.  I am on stock kitkat rooted and unlocked.  No other changes to the phone except the recovery.

Don't fix root with the recovery. Flash the supersu 2.0 zip in recovery and double check the binaries once back in system. Like many others here, I use twrp as well. CWM is a nice light recovery, but does have it's limitations.
