I'm gonna ask a dumb question. Can I strictly root, use motopocalypse to unlock, keep my stock recovery and still take OTA updates, or do I have to use a different process all together once I root and unlock? I've seen people talk about putting different recoveries after root and unlock, I've also seen stories of OTA not working after unlocks, or even bricking phones. I can't afford to brick anything, and I'm a root noob so could you maybe point me towards a link to understand just what I'm doing or something? I saw where someone tried to start a root beginners topic, but it doesn't look finished.

The answer to your question is a quantified yes.  If you don't use root to change system files you won't have any problems taking ota's.  You will loose root with each ota, but with the bootloader unlocked you will be able to regain root. Follow the op on rooting kitkat. Skip loading the custom recovery and you will be good.  You will just have to run the two apk's for root and unlock and your done.

You can stay as stock as you like unlocked. Root however can be an issue at the time of an ota. You would need to remove root and have the stock recovery in order to update. You will be able to reroot after thru a custom recovery. It used to be in the past that you would simply lose root or not, but this recent update looked at some specific areas that root affects and I would imagine this will be common moving forward.

Or you know skip OTA's and use the HoM to upgrade with a keep data script. Far less issues that way.

Thanks for the responses! I'm seriously thinking about making the jump to unlockedness. What are some things I should do after root and unlock to keep myself able to save my phone in case I brick it?

Get it rooted and unlocked.  Then once it's unlocked, worry about backup.  First, my RSD Script Generator can create a KEEP DATA script that will, if you're on stock, recover from most situations you'll get yourself into.  That should be a relief yes?  :)  Second, if you get into roms, your recovery of choice will allow you to nandroid that beotch. :)  The nandroid will allow you to restore back to the point where you took the backup.  So, you're covered.  Finally, titanium backup is a good option to make backups of applications and their data so you can restore your apps when trying out a new rom, or returning back to stock while keeping your updated data.

P.S. Please for the love of God unlock the thing.  Don't debate.  Just do it.  It's been my mission to get everyone unlocked for good reason.  The benefits outweigh the downsides.
