It seems that Big Red's 4G-LTE rollout/deployment will be complete by mid-2013. A full 6 months ahead of their original projection!

Now, to put this into comparison with other carriers:

-Verizon is the largest carrier and will be all done with their 4G rollout by mid next year.
-AT&T is the second largest and is projecting to be done sometime near the end of 2014.
-Sprint is estimating to have it completed sometime in 2013 but it seems a large consensus of writers and analysts think this may not be realistic but who knows? Only the carrier.
-T-Mobile is planning on transitioning it's HSPA+ band to PCS and they have since acquired the AWS band for their phones. This is a fancy way of saying they are preparing but have no definite completion time.

So, what does this all mean to you?

Well, for starters, Verizon will be a full 1.5 years ahead of the next closest carrier (AT&T). Also, very soon we'll see the phasing out of the network-locked CDMA phones and transitioning into GSM. Also, as part of it's agreement to obtain it's new Block C Spectrum (which will be used for GSM) it will have to allow carrier unlocked phones on the network. However, this does not apply to CDMA and LTE phones which is why they've been able to maintain fairly tight constraints on the phones allowed on their network thus far as they are CDMA based.

To sum up, these are some very very exciting developments and I think with the "bring your own device" addition, the development world could grow very rapidly as more people will be able to bring their own unlocked phones to Verizon!

What do you guys think? Are you excited for the potential to bring any GSM unlocked device to Verizon? Think it may cause problems? Let us know!!

Does this mean possible unlocked bootloaders for all devices on big red? That would be very nice

I wish. It means great things for the future but our old devices on vzw are stuck.
