Hello all, it's me again. Today my issue is CWM. After installing it, whenever booting to recovery, all I get is a black screen. Now I've see this with TWRP but I could always tell it was running in the background. Not so with CWM.

Steps:

Renamed install.recover.sh to install.recovery.sh.hold

Connect USB cable

adb reboot bootloader (rebooted - USB Connected)

fastboot devices (saw mine)

fastboot flash recovery CWM6049-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT.img (Successful)

Disconnected USB

Held down Volume Up and Down and Power to shut off

Held down Volume Up and Down and Power to get bootup menu

Scrolled to recovery and pressed Volume Up to select

Motorola dual core logo shows for about 10 seconds then a black screen until I reset.

Thoughts?

Don't worry about renaming the recovery file I don't think you need to do that. Also, disconnect USB cable, boot in Fastboot, then connect cable. Flash the recovery image, unplug cable, hold only power to shut the phone down all the way, and then use the button combo to boot directly into recovery after flashing. I think the main step that's messing things up is the the fact that you are holding all three buttons to power down after flashing. This simulates a battery pull and will cause you to boot straight into the OS, not into recovery. Once you're powered off, you can hold all three buttons and it will get you into the FB menu. Also, which CWM.img are you using?

Ok, just tried the modified process:

Unplug cable.

Power off

Hold V_Up and V_Dn and PWR to get menu
Select AP Fastboot

Connect cable

Flash Recovery

Remove cable

PWR button only to turn off

Hold V_Up and V_Dn and PWR to get menu

Select Recovery

And I get a black screen again. It been about 5 minutes so far.

Which recovery are you using, where did you get it? Also, you are flashing from the screen below?  What's the command prompt output when you flash?

Ok, are you actually on the kit Kat bootloader? CWM for kit Kat is very touchy anyway. Sometimes it takes multiple flashes to get it to stick.

An interesting note: Whenever I try to get back in to recovery, I get the black screen. This leads me to believe I had it all those others times and the screen just wasn't turning on (just like my experience with twrp). Getting the screen to come on consistently using it is the trick. I haven't found an answer to that one yet.

EDIT: Added the word "consistently".

Yeah, use a different recovery.  CWM is notoriously buggy, try TWRP.

When you get into TWRP go into settings and disable the screen lock/blanker setting and set your brightness to about 80% that should end the problem.
