So one of my kids wan'ts a Ipod Touch for Christmas, not for the music but because her sister has one and she uses it to text and play games and some music. So I wanted to do something else since I like to keep Android in the Family.

One was to get her a Cell Phone instead but not activated - I figure any kid of mine will pay for her own service and learn to be responsible for it without me paying the bill.

I figured if she had a google account, she could have games galore, use it for music and be synced to my music library. I am certain I can get her setup without activating the phone and find an app to let her send text messages without being activated and even possibly make calls using something like GrooVe IP (Like I did on my Nexus 7). I have thought about a cheaper tablet for her but I think this idea would work, plus she can't say I didn't get her a cell phone :) Just not activated. I'm sure there are several apps to do texts or do what she wants to do, I just don't know which ones they are.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions about this would be appreciated or if it wouldn't work at all?

Thanks

Samsung makes or made a Galaxy Note device that was called the Galaxy Player. Same device but without a radio. I wonder if this was updated? A pretty awesome Android alternative to IOS that isn't a tablet.

I have two old Android phones from when my wife and i updated our phones and my daughters use them around the house, or anywhere that has wifi. Just like you said, games, internet, music, fb, and messing all keep them satisfied.

Ah pinger textfree works good for me and they updates it to voice calls too. And groove IP is great.

I would get a phone off boost mobile or virgin mobile. One of those prepaid services that seel usually unlockable and fully crack flasher compatible. I kind of miss my old Motorola triumph.

I ended up getting her a prepaid phone from Virgin Mobile - $49.99 for HTC ONE which sale ends today with free shipping. Figure that will be good for a teenager. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

My neice has a one v. I can say you DEFINITELY didn't waste your money. I've modding it for her and their are two roms for it that are stellar. Pacman and evervolv. Both are rock solid. Although for a kid the stock rom is solid too. Might want to just leave it stock though because every rom for it has this or that not working. At any rate, you made a good choice. Definitely worth $50...hell, I wish my first Android was that nice! She'll like it for sure ;)
