UPDATE 10/31: The anticipated ship date for the Nexus 6 is set for November 21st according to Google. This is most likely a placeholder date, as rumors place ship dates as soon as next week. Thanks SamuriHL for the info!

The Google Nexus 6, since announced has sat at a "Coming Soon" status from Google, and preorders were not opened for its planned release in November. But news surfacing this morning may explain why those sitting at their computers impatiently (or patiently) with their credit card have not been able to gain access. Google, as of this morning, says the Nexus 6 is now "Out of Stock."

What?

Here's why: The Nexus 6 could possibly be unavailable off-carrier, meaning that the device may only be available for purchase if tied to a cell phone carrier (on or off contract). Some thought that the preorders were opened and they sold out so fast that it went out of stock. This isn't too surprising, as the Nexus 5 sold out in less than 24 hours, however, the Nexus 6 probably did not sell out in less than 5 minutes.

Google apparently only offered (and could still be offering) a small portion of Nexus 6 devices for direct-to-public release, and the carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint) have reserved the rest, thus releasing the Nexus 6 through carriers instead of offering availability through the Play Store.

How does everyone feel about this move, which seems to be completely intentional by Google? I personally do not think this was the best move as sales will probably be majorly damaged - those who want to buy off-carrier cannot purchase the device as they have been able with Nexus devices in the past. This isn't gonna be good for Google.

Weigh in on this in the comments.

Personally, I'm hoping this isn't bad news for those of use that were planning on purchasing the N6 directly from Moto.

I don't think it matters.  If you can go to a carrier and buy it off contract, then it shouldn't make a difference.  Off contract means NO CONTRACT so you should just be able to walk in and buy the phone at retail pricing.  Honestly this might be good for some people.  No shipping costs, as an example.  As long as availability is decent upon actual release, it shouldn't cause any major issues.

Considering the pre-orders from the play store aren't shipping until mid November I don't care that I missed out on one. I do care if the only other way to get the phone will be via a carrier. I was planning on buying via Motorola.com so I can use their finacing plan.

I call BS on the November 21 ship date.  Who the hell ships on a Friday?  No, that's likely a placeholder date.  I bet they ship sooner.

Mind if I put the anticipated ship date in the OP? I always ask first even if it is as simple as a ship date lol

Go for it.  I'm almost positive it'll be a placeholder rather than the actual ship date. I'll keep an eye on it and if it changes I'll let you know.  Rumors are that it might start shipping next week or the week after.

I was pissed but not anymore. I need to buy through Motorola with the 0% interest. Otherwise no way I can get one.

I sincerely hope that ends up being a viable option.  My fear is that the carriers are reserving most of the initial launch stock leaving only a few units available for other venues like play store and moto's site.  If that ends up being the case, it may be "out of stock" on those other venues until well after launch.  That would suck.

Sadly it's possible, though.  I don't know what their stock is going to be but I'm guessing it'll be on the conservative side so they're not sitting on a lot of inventory if the risk of branding the Nexus line doesn't pay off.
