Well,

I'm off to a new phone. Yes, I lose my unlimited data, but I can go to the 6gb max plan, at least, so they say. We'll see.

So, I ordered the LG G3. 32gb onboard memory, quad-core Snapdragon processor, removable battery, SD card slot that handles up to 128GB cards, bigger screen, but actually seems thinner than the Droid HD, bigger battery (3000 mAh compared to 2530 mAh in Droid RAZR HD non-MAXX).

The unfortunate point is it doesn't have a true unlocked bootloader, but apparently via TWRP and "bumped" ROM images, they have stock LP for it already. I'm sure it will eventually get LP, if it doesn't already have it.

Root is still there as well and apparently, until they change it, you can always revert to a previous build, unlike with this phone, unless the bootloader is unlocked.

Should get it tomorrow with in-store delivery.

LOL!

I can't thank you enough for all the help you've given to us over the years with this phone. You were the one that helped me unlock it in the first place.

The bad part is losing the unlimited plan, but they have a 6gb max plan for $30/month for the unlimited people, so I verified with them, and all I have to do is tell the store rep that I want to switch to that when I get my new phone. I never really went over 6 gb unless I let me daughters tether and watch Netflix in the car. That won't be happening any more of course, but for me, 6gb is better than 2gb.

Ciao! It's been real!

Take care ibolski. I will be joining you in a month, or so. :D

Not sure what phone yet though.

Debating between G3, Turbo and Sony.

Report back how you like it? (So I don't have to hunt your other thread down).

I'm loving it. The phone runs smooth and I have no reason right now to load CM12 on it. The battery life is excellent. I still use the Snapdragon Battery Guru and Greenify apps and it's rooted so I can use TiBu to backup and restore my apps, as well as run the "patch" that allows writing to the external SD card.

Usually, after about 36 hours, I'm down to around 45% battery left. That includes receiving and making phone calls, texts, playing music (once I did it for almost an hour), as well as popping in and out of Game of War (got a big kingdom event coming up so I want to make sure I don't get killed, so I'm building up my resources as well as getting as many shields as possible to survive "the Purge").

Today, I'm down to 65% after about 20 hours of use.

The version of G3 you get depends on which carrier you are on. Verizon customers, like me, have the VS985. Overall, the phones are the same hardware wise, but rooting depends on which software version you are running, and depending on the model you have, the software versions are different. For me on VS985 (VZW), 10b is the last version that is rootable via Stump root. However, so far, unlike the Motorola phones, you CAN flash back to previous versions. There are not "official" images from LG, but people have pulled the images off for others to use.

So, if you get a phone with the latest update on it (12B for VZW), you can use flash tools (only under Windows, sorry. No fastbooting allowed), and the proper KDZ or TOT files for your model, you can flash back to 10b and then root.

Once rooted, you then can use flashify to flash TWRP, known as "bumping". Bumping allows you to flash any ROM or kernel specific to your model. So, if someone released a ROM or kernel for the AT&T model (which is D850), you cannot use that on the VS985. Some goes for anything release for VS985. It's only good on the Verizon model. Think of it like the differences between an XT925 and XT926 or even the M. You don't EVER flash the firmware for one model onto a different model. Same goes for ROMs in this case on the G3.

Bumping is a way of "fooling" the phone into allow it to flash anything on it that hasn't been "verified" by LG. Just like the key used in the Motorola phones. Unless your key is the same or newer than what is currently on your phone, you can't flash anything to it unless the bootloader is unlocked. In the case of the LG G3, the bootloader is NOT unlocked, but there is a way of "fooling" it, and that is called "bumping" and the TWRP we use on the G3 is "bumped" so that it can flash ROMs and kernels to the phone. However, the ROMs and Kernels have to be bumped as well for your specific model. But, all ROMs and kernels released for all models of the G3 are bumped as no one really has an unlocked bootloader on their G3 that I know of.

Development support is booming, even for the VZW version. I'm hoping on these forums, they eventually open up a Verizon specific G3 forum. Right now, I believe it's only sprint and at&t. Not sure who I could ask to open up a VZW (VS985) forum, but that would be nice.

On "that other forum" known as XDA, there is a specific VZW forum for the G3 as well as the general G3 forums that cover all other models (overseas, AT&T, Sprint, etc).

I really like this phone. It's my favorite phone I've had, possibly even my XT926. SHOCK! I know. I hate to say that, especially since the bootloader was unlocked on it, but so far, with the G3, stock is running just great, so I have no reason to flash, but as I said, I am rooted and I am bumped just in case CM12 becomes even more stable, but it has it's issues, more so than the one on the XT926.

Go to this post on XDA. It's where I started and it really does give you a LOT of information. It's what I used to research this phone and figure out if it was the right replacement for me. This is in the general G3 section, so it's not specific to the any version of the G3, but it does apply to all versions and has a nice rooting spreadsheet that explains for each model how to root (if possible) and if it's bump-able:

Now to go and find out about getting a VZW specific forum create here as I enjoy these forums a lot and the people I know on them.

Thanks so much all the times you helped me, I really appreciate it stop back here occasionally  ,

got me thinking but I cannot give up my unlimited , just bought a like new HD off E-bay to keep on using for a longer while.

Verizon just sucks big ones wanting to get your plan for a new phone real idiots, nothing you can do though.

I'll keep this bookmark and watch you with the new toy, I don't quite understand some things but hey if it's root able that's good.

Take care buddy!

Glad I could be of help. That's what I like to do.

Yeah, giving up the unlimited sucks, but with the 6gb MAX plan, I'm doing really well, so it doesn't feel like I really lost anything. I never really streamed anything (mainly my daughters did when they tethered to my phone to watch Netflix in the car ride, which that is now gone!), but otherwise, I would rarely crack 3gb/month, so in the end, this works out fine for me.

Plus, with the G3, it supports up to 128gb cards, so now I can definitely go get that extra big card and stuff even MORE music on my phone!

No LP yet for it, but so far, KK on it is awesome. It's 4.4.2 but has all the 4.4.4 security patches and it runs smooth. No crashes, no reboots, nothing. Once in awhile, it might slow down during a game (such as Game of War), but only if I've been playing it for a long time continuously (like over an hour). Usually, I just exit out and then restart the app and everything is fine.

Not sure how much the quad-core Snapdragon helps, but so far, loving this phone. I've had it for over 3 weeks now and not one complaint about it, other than the bootloader isn't unlocked. But as long as I can continue to "bump" it, it doesn't matter but that could get "fixed" by LG or Verizon. However, over 3 OTAs since the release of the G3, they haven't fixed it yet. The LP OTA might, but reports from overseas seem to speak otherwise. People are still able to downgrade to a rootable version and bump, so hopefully that's how it will be with the LP version. I'm hoping I can maintain root over the OTAs. I was able to for all the OTAs for KK for this phone even though the latest is not rootable out of the box (no exploit found yet). But, using SuperSU to maintain root over OTAs has worked. Just not sure it will for LP. Have to wait and see.

There are plenty of LP AOSP-based ROMs, but then I lose a lot of the functionality that the stock ROM gives that I really enjoy, so for now, I'm still on stock, but rooted. Haven't had to freeze anything (use Greenify to hibernate) and battery life is excellent. After 36 hours, I usually have around 40% battery left.

I do miss the HD though. It was nice having a fully unlocked phone and could flash whatever was on it, but the performance between the HD and the G3 is night and day. And so is the display: 1440 x 2560 for the G3, compared to 1280 x 720 display for the XT926. Videos, especially HD videos, look awesome. I guess in some respects, the G3 with it's pixel ration has a display that is better than your 1080p HD tvs! Of course, it's just a 5.5" display, so it doesn't mean much, but still, picture clarity on this phone is great.
