I was getting bored with the roms we have for the razr maxx hd. So, I decided to give a try at creating my own rom. I have the jelly bean based loaded on Custom Rom Creator. Roflmao.....I was lost. where do you start? After a while of trying to figure this out, I realized how hard the developers work to bring us their work. I am a determined person and do not like failure. So, I will read and try to get my rom built. I bow to the developers. If anyone can give any good reading to help me out. Thanks

I know what you mean. I have been trying to learn this stuff for what seems like forever. I do a lot of Google searching and I have learned how to decompile and compile apk's to do a little themeing but I really want to learn how to build a rom from scratch. I know how to build from source but I wish I knew how to add features to the source before building and how to trouble shoot when something goes wrong with the build. I have no clue what "Custom Rom Creator is" But the way most of us do it is we grab the source code, make our edits in the code, compile it on Linux, zip it up and flash away. I know there have been some efforts as making some 1-click rom building methods. But that's not really developing anything. It takes weeks, months to learn how to build a rom. Baby steps. Learn how to theme the rom you like best and take it from there. This isn't a thing learned overnight.

I know there are a few programs out like android kitchen that will let you modify roms to some degree. MoDaCo (or however you spell it) has an online kitchen that lets you "bake" your own rom from your own source. But like tucstwo said, thats more modifying not developing. I have been tinkering with android since the G1 and i still suck at it lol. I have books i have been reading for a while about linux, ubuntu, and android in order to start developing. Like you said, mad props to the developers that make our devices "custom"! Just keep reading and tinkering. Im still working on learning to theme and build apks so i can answer some noob questions if ya like. Many great devs here that could answer a lot more!

Thanks for the replies. I will just settled in and read read and read. You are right. I am going to start with learning to theme. We take the devs for granted sometimes. I was so lost opening the deodexed base.

If only there were more people like you guys out there. Some people like to just be ungrateful and think everything is owed to them. One more thing, if you don't think a ROM is very different or unique, move on instead of bashing the dev. Some of these ROMs that get put out are simply quick builds so we can push something out fast then update it as time goes on because we don't have all the time in the world to just knock everything out in one shot.

I appreciate threads like these and wish more people knew how to show some respect to people who are doing what others can't, or refuse to.
