In the past I used ubuntu 11.04 (if I remember correctly) when compiling a rom from source. I read though mint is more java friendly than ubuntu (had issues getting jdk to work at first with ubuntu but once I got it working it was smooth after. Can't comment on mint although I wanted to try it out.

I use Ubuntu desktop on my laptop and have set up an Ubuntu server for my brother in laws security cameras. So naturally I would say Ubuntu but honestly doing some googling the only difference I found people saying was that Mint was more polished then Ubuntu and possibly focusing more on multimedia verses social media like Ubuntu.

If most of the Dev time is spent compiling and syncing and such from the command line then Ubuntu or Mint doesn't matter. If you want a GUI then Mint is preferred. That's my opinion. With mint being based on Ubuntu install and configuration is the same.

Is there a need to have a GUI at all?

Each distro has its advantages and disadvantages .... i prefer ubuntu or bodhi... yes you have to manually set up java etc....but when it is done... it is set up as YOU want it .... from what i know of mint, it looks nicer lol and it is primarily geared towards media and social media applications.... Ubuntu and bodhi are more of a "workhorse" IMO

Its a fairly "barebones" distro... but its quick and smooth... minimal but pleasant gui... and about half the installed size as ubuntu....

It depends on how hot its going to run.... i would closely monitor the cpu temps for
The first week or so of hard use..the "stock" heat sinks and fans MAY do the job...(i would test in both active and passive cooling modes) .....but if a major upgrade is needed for cooling... i highly recommend liquid cooling... (or you could just run it in the deep freezer) LOL....

I like that also.... it holds temp better and its a bit safer on the components (i think) .... but it can be MESSY

I saw a video of a guy that used liquid nitrogen as a cpu coolant..... interesting... not very practical tho...

I agree..... but if i remember right...in the vid the cpu never got above about 15-20 deg C under a high stress test...... my luck.... i would spill it directly onto the cpu and of course it would crack it...
