Hello all. I've been membered into xda-developers and droidrzr forums for a week or more, and just now getting around to an intro. What brought me here was being presently stuck between an HTC D-Inc 4G LTE running ICS 4.0.4, and a Moto X (2013) on KK 4.4.4, and wanting to be somewhere in between.

Mostly, I'm a privacy freak as well as a former IT security (and enterprise) manager... and very happy to NOT be either of the latter any longer, because it's just plain nuts out there now.

As for Android, my ideal would be JB 4.3 (on any ROM that doesn't deprive me of camera or any major JB function) so I can trim permissions/connections on many or most apps; and minimal Gapps is part of my bottom line. And I don't much care for some other features of KK as well.

So that's basically why I've been buried in developer threads for the past several days.

It started when I ordered a RAZR M, and was delivered a Luge with (erk) KK 4.4.2 and system version 185.46.10... newer build (Aug '14) with root exploit defeated.....

Found the brand new exploit on xda-devs for rooting 18x.46.15 and newer ..10; but nothing yet for unlocking BL. So I finally decided to return the Luge and get an actual RAZR M, with hopefully a more proven route to rooting and UBL.

Yesterday a new M arrived, in the original Verizon box, stickers still on the phone, etc. It came with 4.1.2.

So: Now I have a RAZ M with Jellybean, build 98.16.3, Mar 29 2013. And still, nothing is working to get me root. I must've read (literally) a couple hundred pages of "try this", "this works!", and so on and so on and so on, but I'm still stuck.

I've got MDM installed and current. Using Motorola cable on USB 2.0 (also tried another cable). Windows 7x64 recognizes my phone ("XT907" in Device Manager), and SDK Tools adp devices returns my phone's serial number. I've run 2 versions of motochopper a dozen times or more, without success ("FAILURE" at rooting). Saferoot won't even run (hangs at waiting for device). I've FDR'd 10 or more times, basically after every single failure.

I'm using a microSIM borrowed from my HTC phone. Otherwise I haven't set up anything on the RAZR M. Mobile Data and Wifi are Off. Developer Options>Debugging/Allow Mock Locations are On.

I have not tried "everything" yet, mostly because I really don't want to brick it. An OTA is available for 98.1.30(?) but apparently that would make my situation even worse.

So that's why I'm still browsing, reading, searching, hunting... I Want My 4-Point-3... :) .....

..... Towelroot?? TWRP?? Flash an upgrade to 4.4 just so I can (attempt to) root, unlock and then downgrade?? .......??? I'm at the point now where I'm just going in circles (I think I "knew" more 4 days ago than I do now), more confused and frustrated than ever.
____________

At any rate, the last thing to say is I'm overwhelmed and grateful for all of you super-dev's out there, trying to be as helpful and cooperative and noob-nurturing as you can possibly be, for the millions of us who just refuse to accept status quo.

Update: Now rooted with unlocked bootloader. I used RSD Lite 6.2.4 to flash VZW_XT907_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml.zip, installed tr.apk and motopocalypse.apk from external SD, and then grabbed SuperSU from the Play Store. After shoveling out all the clutter from my brain-cloud, it was as simple as that.
