It is. The z build is the international build. It's the one everyone except t-mobile users should be using.

I just picked up the N6 from Verizon. I have been reading that once you update to 5.1.1 Verizon pushes their bloat with it (backup etc..) I have done the update and have absolutely no Verizon apps on my N6. Are the articles I have been reading wrong or did I get lucky somehow?

Not lucky. So far all the builds have come with just the voicemail and account manager from verizon. Now if they keep their hands off Marshmallow it will be great.

The carrier apps are only supposed to show up if you run through setup and activation with the sim in the device.
