So as I’ve stated before this was one of the first places I’d found when I got my Razr back in October. Learned a lot about the ins and outs of the phone like how to root and of course install ROMs. Since I was a newbie to all of it, it’s been a learning process but now that I’ve had some time to play around with it and experiment with different Mods and ROMs. I taught I would share some of my thoughts on what I’ve found and “personally” concluded for all of my fellow newbie colleagues!

First if you have any fears or doubts about if to root your phone or not. All I can say is if you’re confidant you know how to do it then I highly suggest you do so. What’s Rooting? In Linux terms It’s the ability to have SuperUser rights or in Windows terms Admin rights, giving you access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked as read only. As you could imagine the flexibility you gain with the ability to modify your phone can be highly beneficial and useful to you and your phone if properly applied. It also gives you the ability to install ROMs and Mods.

What’s a MOD? MOD is a modification to the system either by scripts, files or applications (apk). Some examples are changing of audio drivers, CPU over and under clocking, zipaligning and etc.

Note: Before you get started with installing ROMS it is HIGHLY recommended that you safe guard your phone by backing it up and installing the newest version of safestrap.

What’s a Rom? Read Only Memory – ROM or better yet an image of the phone internal memory which holds the phone’s OS firmware and stock applications. There are varies types of ROMs the most popular being Android Open Source Project (AOSP), CyanogenMod (CM), Android Open Kang Project (AOKP), and MIUI. These ROMs, sometimes referred to as stocks are typically modified by groups or independents like Speedcore, BataKang, Nitroglycerin, and etc with their own particular twist or additional modifications to these ROMs.

Like most I had a great amount of fun with the testing of pretty much all the Razr ROMs available on the site, first with the ICS versions then I’d upgraded to the JB kernel and I’ve been playing with those since. In doing so I’ve come to the conclusion that they all have there peaks and pitfalls, in most cases these ROMs are designed to be highly customizable with the added flexibility to things like themes, notification bar, screen locks, system and CPU functionality. Unfortunately most of them also come with some sacrifice like the lost of one to two or even multiple capabilities to your phone like camera or camera flash, blue tooth, text messaging, HDMI, webtop, and other unknown or yet to be discovered glitches. Still I don’t want to give the impression that you should hold off from testing these ROMs, most developers will tell you in advance what issues the ROMs may have and in some cases there are workarounds for those issues, all it takes is a little research and reading to find them. For myself I think I’ll stick with a debloated, modestly deblured and somewhat AOSP type of ROM and self mod whatever additions I might want to add. At least until there’s a highly functional AOKP ROM develop for the new JB upgrade.

Personally I want to thank all the developers and groups who take the time and energy to put out all the ROMs and Mods that circulate throughout this and other forums. It’s always enjoyable to see a new post that explores and expands on the capabilities of my phone. Lastly this forum has a wealth of knowledge and knowledgeable people on it so I suggest you become intimately familiar with the search bar and just ask if you can’t find what you’re looking for. Again thanks for all you guys do and your hard work!
