I purchased a Droid Razr Maxx yesterday evening and it came preloaded with .748. With my phone completely bone stock, I successfully rooted the phone using

and then I downloaded Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and protected root. Afterward, I upgraded to .173 using

and everything worked without a hitch, except when I tried to restore root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. As many others have posted in this thread, OTA Rootkeeper says that rootkeeper has SU permissions and then "root su restored", but root has NOT been restored. I did not temporarily unroot before upgrading. From what I've read, I need to downgrade to .748, re-root, and try again.

I don't want to use the fastboot files to flash the phone back to a bone stock .744, as I don't want to lose everything that I currently have on the phone and have to start over. Here's my question: If I use the .173 to .748 downgrade zip in

Please Login or Register to see this Hidden Content

and apply it like I did when I went from .748 to .173, will it wipe anything off of the phone? Will I lose any data, apps, text messages, etc like I would if I used the fastboot files?

Thank you for your help! :)

There apps on the market that can save your existing apps. I believe there are apps that save the text messages too. I know that when you get an Official OTA that you keep everything, but I'm not sure if the data matches up from .173 back to .748. I use Ultimate back pro to backup my apps. A lot of people use Titanium Backup as well. There may be others. I use Go Launcher, and when I restore it using Ultimate Backup pro, I just restore the data and the app and it puts everything on my screens for me. I currently don't use anything to save the text messages though. I hope this offers a little help.

Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure how it is with Ultimate Backup pro, but Titanium Backup requires root. Since I lost root after I updated, I can't use it. I didn't lose any data or anything else when I manually upgraded from .748 to .173, so I'm hoping that someone will confirm that it's the same deal when downgrading to .748 from .173. Thanks!

One other question for you guys. If I get it back on .748 and rooted, should I temporarily unroot using OTA Rootkeeper before updating to .173? Furthermore, should I do the

and chmod protect the Superuser files before updating to .173 so that I won't lose root again? Thanks!

By the way, SuperOne Click doesn't work property with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and .173. Gotta use Doom's Zergrush exploit

1) Using my downgrade zip does not remove anything from the phone. No need for titanium or any other backup, blah blah blah.
2) OTA rootkeeper only works when using Zergrush root as stated by matt above just to confirm
3) RSD does not wipe anything off the phone when used - fastboot method does (that's one of the commands you use in the method posted around this forum, you could actually skip that step and keep your stuff).

Thanks for your replies! As long as the .173 to .748 downgrade zip doesn't introduce any issues, I'll just use that! :) Are there any links to rooting this phone using Doom's Zergrush exploit? I can't seem to find anything other than the one click method. Also, should I still chmod protect the SU files as an extra precaution? Thanks, guys!!

Thanks! I flashed the .173 to .748 downgrade zip, rooted with Doom's Zergrush exploit, protected root with OTA Rootkeeper and temporarily unrooted, flashed the .748 to .173 update zip and successfully restored root using OTA Rootkeeper. Took me less than 30 minutes while I was watching the game and we're all good! I didn't lose any data or anything else during the downgrade and update. Thanks again to everyone who replied.

IMHO yes you should always do the 4ever root process even if you do plan to use Rootkeeper.
