So I had to do a factory reset yesterday. Sucks when you have to reinstall all your apps/apks and redo all your settings on your phone.

Im still a n00b at a lot of the android stuff, I play with it here and there. Ive got the HP TP running CM7 and that has CWR built in. Ive made a backup for my TP, but ive never deployed a backup. Is it basically a complete "image" (like a PC image) of the phone and all my settings? So if i were to do a factory reset, then deploy a backup i had made, would it set everything back to what/where it was before (apps, shortcuts, txts, call logs, ect ect)?

This time around I want to back everything up after its set up to where I want it.

So ive seen Safestrap, bootstrap, and CWR.
Are these the only 3?
Does CWR work on the Razr?

I dont mess with different ROMs or Kernals. Im just a simple rooted user haha.
If CWR works on the Razr, I would like to use that because it seemed pretty simple on the TP.

Do I have to worry about OTAs or anything with any of the backup methods?

Thanks :)

I use titanium backup to backup and restore apps. It works great and will also let you freeze apps.

I use mybackup pro ( also a free root version) This backups almost everything, including text messages phone calls etc. I just used the free version until changing phones, the pro version allows tyou to backup to their cloud services, and move information to another phone.

It has the ability to backup system files as well, but I have heard of people having issues when they restore system data into a different ROM.

If you want a nandroid backup, I use safestrap to do it.

With SS you can switch back and forth between 2 ROMs. Good if you like to play with ROMs or are a dev.

Other than that they are pretty much the same.

gotcha.

I dont really mess around with ROMs at all.. so I think it wont really matter what way I go.

Althought the safestrap looks like it was updated yesterday haha

And bootstrap was updated today

Really unless you are alpha testing ROMs or are a dev bootstrap is the way to do it. Especially since we can rsd back to stock if something goes wrong.

Bootstrap is a like regular CWM recovery. It just kind of hijacks the stock recovery. You have to use the app to launch it. But, it only has one system, the phones actual system, that it flashes to.

Safestrap comes up before your bootanimation and gives you the option to boot into it. It wipes your preinstall folder and turns it into your safe partition. This allows you to flash a rom there and play with/test it without ever messing with your actual system. It won't let you flash to the phones actual system or anything giving you a safety net. It wasn't designed to be used like it has been. But, at the time we didn't have any safety net. Now that we have the fastboot files so we can recover from soft bricks BS is what most people would be using. If you want to play with things like IC3RAZR Alpha ROMs you'll want to use SS.

No, not really. With SS you have the option to switch back and forth between two systems without having to nandroid back and forth. I personally use BS. They are both CWM and give you all the options.

So it will be like a "restore from a previous point in time" like on a PC?

Whatever was on or done to my phone at the time of a created backup is what would be deployed? Still retain root access and such?

Yep. It will backup settings, apps, messages, everything and stores it on your SD card. When you restore it puts your phone back like it was at the moment of the backup.
