With the Motorola Razr car dock from Verizon, I know the following cases work without the insert: Just about all Silicone/TPU cases, Otter Box: Commuter, Seidio: Active/ Surface, Case Mate: Barely There/ Tough Case, Incipio: Feather/ NGP/ Silicrylic, Body Glove: Fade/ Flex, Qmadix: Metalix Snap-on/ Vibe Flex-Gel, SGP Ultra Capsule.

Otterbox commuter case firs both HD and car dock. HD dock needs slight modification by rounding edges on the block where the connectors are.

If you're going to use a case on your Maxx the OG Razr dock will actually work better with the snap in removed.

you are 100% right. I got one of each dock, and there is no way possible, the maxx dock will work with any case. So i took the og razr nav dock, took out the insert, and used a dremel to grind down from the M logo up towards the bevel at the top.I just have a cruzelite clear gel case on, but it fits fine now. I am going to get some little foam padding to go in the top right and left corner, as there is a little bit of play. I honestly think you could actually make this work with a otterbox commuter case. I would test it out, but i dont have one lol. I have a skinnit on mine, and then the clear gell case so you can see my bling.
When my wife gets home later today, i will put up a pic of my og razr dock, holding my maxx with a gel case.

I'm with the OP on this one. I had an awesome Otterbox Defender on my Razr but when I got my car dock it was a no-go. And removing my phone from the case every time I wanted to dock it was out of the question as I use my car dock several times a day. Kinda sucks as now I have a defender just sitting there collecting dust.

I wonder... i know ther is a hd dock adapter plug. Ie you plug your phone into this then your power sorce and your hdmi output and the plug tricks your phone into thinking it is the hd dock. Thus you get all the effects of hd dock minus the cradle. I wonder if there is something like this for nav. A plug that would simulate the nav dock, and pull audio and all from the micro usb. Then we could use one of the generic fits all phones nav cradels. I have actually saw some far nicer than thw vzw nav cradle. Only problem is it doesent auto launch my nav apps, smart actions and all. I guess i could pull apart my nav dpck and make a plug, but id much rather buy one.

With thus setup we could use any case and be good to go..

What are your thougts?

I would rather make one. I would enjoy it and also having the knowledge to do it. Custom is always a better feeling. I would be game. I love to make my laptop or desktop act as a lapdock 500. Not sure but if I had the time I would look into it. It can be done, just the testing part might get interesting or dull.

The hack/app you are talking about is called Nebtop, which confuses your phone into thinking a regular mini hdmi wire is the TV dock.

That idea would be nifty for the Nav dock but how would I suction cup it to my windshield?

No, i am aware of nebtop, the app. But what im talking about is hardware. Its an actuall physical plug that simulates the hd dock. If we had a hardware like this to simulate nav dock, then we could get any generic car mount for our phone to hold it to windshield, as there are several nice ones that are big enough for our cases.
However that being said. A nebtop like app, but to launch nav instead of webtop may work. But if im going to have to manually launch an app, its a loss for me. Thats the real bonus of the nav dock, is that all i do is throw it in the cradle and it launches a set off apps automatically for me.

Kulek on xda built his own hd station. I wonder if he knows what circuitry it would take to build a car dock? I believe he uses nebtop though.

yup. If we could find/make something like that to sim the nav dock wiring, we could use any mount to fit any case.

Yeah but is the trigger for the navigation dock in the plugs? The OG Droid docks all had magnets that activated either car or desktop mode depending on the polarity of the magnet in the dock. As far as I can tell the plug in my navigation dock is just a standard micro USB plug unless there is some special wiring/connectors in the plug itself. Or is there a magnet or some other trigger within the dock itself? A little dissecting of the navigation dock could provide answers, but alas I'm unwilling to butcher my dock. LOL.
