I have both USB debugging and charge only modes on.

Things to try:
a different mode (mass storage?)
reinstall drivers
use a different USB port
different cable
redownload the exploit (bad download?)

According to your post, it's finding the phone but for some reason the exploit is failing (duh!). Have you done any other mods to the phone? Been rooted before? Other ROMs?

You could try to use Matt's Utility to set it completely back to stock and reroot from there.

I have version 2.3.6 stock. System 6.12.181 that I would like to root. Will this app work on this version? And then I install the root keeper app I should be able to retain root through ICS upgrade? Really only looking for root for tether at this time. Just left my Fascinate that was rooted and miss my tether.

Yes ota will keep root. But sometimes you will loose root. Make sure su binarys are up to date before you protect root. I am not sure if it will root 181. I know utility 1.6 will root 181. If you do loose root and still have the backup of su. The terminal way to root 75 will work for 79.

I have Moto Razr....I will cut you.
To powerful to fall into my hands. Click......Rooted. ICS rommed!!!!! Muhahahahah!!!!

I'm having the below problem when trying to root. system version is 6.12.181

" 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

I installed the motorola drivers and am in charge only, USB debugging on...

For some reason I couldn't run the utility on my work pc. Tried at home and worked just as it should. No idea why it won't work at work but oh well. Happily rooted now.

Was adb installed on your computer at work? If so, it sounds like the folder it was located in needed to be added to the path. If you're curious, at the command prompt, try changing to the folder that adb.exe is located in. Don't know where it's at so I can't tell you just what to type but, for example, mine is located in C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools. So, at the prompt I'd type:

The prompt will then show this.

If the prompt changes to the folder you want, then type the adb command you're trying to use.
