Matt's tool or Dan's Motofail method. or the droidrazrroot.com method?

Does the phone have to be in ab fastboot mode for all these techniques or just for matts method?

Matts utility has the motofail method. Go with the utility. And the phone
Just need to have the phone on and USB debugging on. Settings>applications>development to turn it on.

While you could just update to 173 and grab Motofail, you might as well grab Matt's tool as it's handy for mutliple reasons and Motofail is packaged into it I believe.

Some things on Matt's tool require fastboot menu up and some don't. It will state if it does or doesn't however when you start selecting the options in the Tool.

To get into fastboot just power off the phone, press both volume buttons and power button...then volume down button to highlight ap fastboot and volume up button to select it.

my mistake, still, get that utlility,
