I realize there are tons of posts on apps/bloat that are "safe" to freeze/remove. With the .173 OTA now out, wondering if there's a better procedure than just freezing an app (TiBu) then simply waiting/testing/rebooting to see if it causes any unwanted FCs, etc.

When looking at apps via Manage Apps, and selecting those that are running, I see many that list "1 process and 2 services." So, I'm thinking that particular app may have an effect on another service/app that depends on it being there.

One particluar app I'd like to freeze and/or remove would be the VZW Backup Assistant since I rely exclusively on Google. But I see: Backup Assistant Plus, Backup Assistant+, Backup Assistant+Contacts, and Backup Assistant+Media.

Is there any way to "see" what apps are crossed referenced or directly/indirectly affecting other apps that I may want to use/keep active? There was one particular problem I experienced with "process com.motorola.contacts" that drove me crazy trying to figure out what was causing the FCs. VZW ended up replacing the phone as they nor Moto could figure out was was wrong after several Factory Resets. I would have rather found the fix; but this was in the first week of owning the Razr and VZW wanted to hand me a new phone so I took them up on the offer.

Thanks for any feedback; or threads I can be pointed to which might educate me.

Well since I have had an android I have just used TiBu, I dont think a little update will change that.

With the backup assistant you can freeze all three

As far as all the other apps, look for threads with safe apps to freeze or anything like that. Most will post what is ok to freeze. If your unsure of a certain app feel free to ask someone.

I use Ultimate Backup Pro by jRummy. It works really well too. I have learned to stay away from deleting anything. Just freeze it is my suggestion. Less worries.

ROM Toolbox Pro hands down is the best utility IMO. Now what I do is make a backup of every stock system when I first load it up . That is for a last resort, will explain later. In my research and personal use TBU does not play nice with the RAZR. I also backup all system apps in ROM toolbox. I always back them up to SD-ext. Now I no what system apps can go and what needs to stay. If your new I suggest freezing them or renaming them .bak until you no that your phone will work 100%. Now as my last resort say you fubared your phone so bad deleated stuff you dud not realize you where going to need etc etc. When you make a backup of your stock system, keep a copy on your PC or a flash drive. Now if you are in thus situation you can use appextractor from the market and restore files from a backup!

NOTE+++ when you are on a different ROM and you restore your apps and DATA, there is a good chance most of them won't work, or they will force close, or just blow your phone up

So, If I purchase the ROM Toolbox Pro, then I won't need TiBu or the CWM ROM Manager Premium for future work? Guess it shows that I haven't jumped into the custom ROMs as of yet.

Appears from the Market description that ROM Toolbox does a lot more that any of the ROM utilities plus gives the option to do nandroid bu's. Also, if I go for this apk, should I uninstall the TiBu and Bootstrap Recovery (Matt's Utility) that I have installed now? I'm also thinking I wouldn't need Root Explorer?

I really appreciate all the feedback!

Thanks!

I installed the 2.3.6 update over the weekend and was curious about which apps it was now ok to freeze using Titanium Backup. I read on some other sites that there were stability issues with apps that were frozen on 2.3.5 after the update, so I went ahead and did some freeze testing. So far my razr seems faster and I haven't noticed any problems (it has only been about 12 hours, though). Let me know if you notice any problems with my list, but I just rooted for the first time about 2 nights ago, so I'm pretty new to this stuff myself.

Here's the list of apps I've frozen so far:
amazon kindle 3.2.0.35
backup assistant plus 1.0
backup assistant+ 1.0
backupassistant + Contacts 2.3.6
backup assistant+ media 1.0

social sharing 2.3.6 **Don't disable if you plan on using "Quick Upload" for photos/videos**

v cast tones 4.5.13
verizon location agent 0.0.0.62
videosurf 2.0.0
voicemail 1.1 (i use google voice)
vz navigator 7.5.1.54

Just to be clear. I froze these apps, I did not delete them.

I realized that there is a specific forum for "safely frozen apps" so I have reposted this under that topic.

DDX: You and jc have really sparked my interest in ROM Toolbox Pro! Couple of questions if you don't mind...........

Since I've got Bootstrap Recovery installed via Matt's Utility, would this create a conflict with ROM Tollbox Pro, and need to be un-installed prior to installing the Toolbox?

Also, you stated that you always do a backup of the stock system via RTP (ROM Toolbox Pro); then also backup the system apps to sd-ext. From my limited experience, I'm thinking your backup of the stock system via RTP is the same as a nandroid backup? If this is correct, then I'm "thinking" that entering recovery at boot and restoring the backup would restore the entire sytem to the state of the backup. Yet, you mention using app extractor to restore files from the backup............

Sorry if I'm oversimplifing this and sound totally confused. Just not enough experience I guess to fully understand the process.

Thanks for any feedback or posts you can point me towards to get me a better understanding.

Any update on your list? i.e. Did you need to unfreeze anything you previously listed as frozen?

Thanks for putting that list together though. Definitely helpful.

I unfroze "social sharing 2.3.6" because I needed it to quick upload my gallery photos to facebook or picasa. Other than that, everything else in the list is frozen on my phone and it's still working butter smooth. Obviously, don't freeze any of the apps that are in my list if you plan on using them.

1 - No, you will not be using RTb for flashing ROMs, just pretty much every other root related function. Nitro's Bootstrap is what is used to actually flash a ROM.

2 - My RTb backs up system apps automatically but I never use them. The only app (or any) backup I use is user apps + data for restoring apps after flashing. And since you are using Bootstrap to flash ROMs anyways you may as well just make your nandroid backups there.

:-D :-D
