I'm posting this here since my ongoing research has not turned anything up yet. I got this router back in Nov. (election day to be exact) from a local best buy. worked great at first. loved coming home and having my bionic get great speeds when it was connected, same for my desktop PC, and Xbox.

Last couple of weeks, I noticed it was really slowing down. Meaning lag on any device there was connected to it, gaming is pretty much not worth doing, and speed tests show significant reduction. Like normally I should get around, 8.5 Mbps down and 600 Kbps up. recently it's been more like 1 Mbps down and 250 Kbps up. I have CenturyLink as my ISP.

When I connect directly to the modem speeds are good. and when I first connect through the router it's fine. But after three router has been on a while, it gets really warm and starts to throttle everything down. Inn using the most recent Asus firmware for it (3.0.0.4.270).

Does anyone have any experience with this router, or a similar model? Should I hold on to it and wait for better firmware? I'm open too pretty much any suggestion.

I would try booting the roster with nothing but one computer hooked up to the Ethernet port. Make sure no wireless devices are connected. Then test your speed. If its good, start connecting your devices, one by one, to see of its a device or the router. Hope this helps!

Is that the most recent firmware from the auto updater for the router, or directly from asus' site? I don't have one of these yet, but have been researching them since I'm considering getting one. You may want to just re-flash the firmware to verify that it isn't an issue, but if it was it would lose its settings if power is lost. From what you're describing, it sounds like a thermal issue. Maybe check the airflow around the router, and make sure it's not overheating.

Good luck with it.

I would have to agree with the thermal issue, as it is after extended periods of uptime. Honestly SOHO routers should not have to get that hot.

Does it continue to have these issues after a reboot? without changing anything airflow wise?
If it does not but then slows does within a few minutes then it is probably a thermal issue.
If it clears up for a few weeks then starts to slow down again it maybe that the router is running out of State tables(memory for NAT translations)
So the longer it is up and working the worse it gets till it will probably crash.
I have this exact issue with my original Actiontech from my FIOS install. Thankfully I worked around it completely and it barely sees any traffic from my systems.
Hope you get it resolved quickly.

I have flashed the firmware again. It it's also the most up to date fw from Asus's site. It's also the same from the Auto downloader within the router.

Air flow is clean and clear around the router too.

I'm suspecting a faulty unit.

It doesn't have the issues after a reboot. It'll usually a few minutes before it starts to slow down.

You might want to look at the router logs too - your IP address might be getting hammered for a DDoS - seen that happen a lot in the past. I usually power down my modem, wait a few minutes, and power it back up and see if it has acquired a new IP address.

Router logs provide a great deal of info and if you have a lot of incoming ACK packets from IPs that you're not actively sending data to (aka surfing to, gaming to, etc.) then you're under attack.

I also notice a high level of such packets whenever I try to use anything Torrent related as well, which is one reason I've all but stopped using torrents and seeding in particular.

I'll try that too, just gotta find the location of the logs. Thanks.

Like you I ran into issues with my RT-N16 Asus and started experimented with DD-WRT. DD-wrt support was getting sparse and freaking me out however .. the asus had great potenial.

I am a Computer Programmer with years of coding experience but DID NOT want to become a LINUX router programmer; and roll my own DD-WRT. So, form time to time I would search all of the DD-WRT threads for fixes to the Broadcom WIFI drivers. Most of the time the recommendation was to ROLL-YOUR-OWN and lacking the time to create my own DD-WRT kernal there simply was no way to FIX the degrading router WIFI signal after each power-up. So I wrote a script to reboot it every 48 hours (I know I am lazy) After what was about a year I stumbled upon a thread that explained my exact problem.. The thread mentions a progammer named KONG and for me the rest is history :)

The thread that started it all for me Read the last thread on the page ....

He comes out with new updates very often and for me has features that are very usefull ...
I automount (2) 1 TB USB drives so I have a super router that I use as a NAS and it really is awsome.

Again I use DD-WRT only through the menus but occasional drop into LINUX for the fun of it. :)
But most of all this is very solid and uses DD-WRT menuing system which is awesome...

I would suggest you disable the download master feature and see if that solves the problem. You may simply giving all your upstream bandwidth up to torrents.

It you ate looking into alternative firmware , I would suggest asus-merlin as I have found it to be very stable. He sticks very close to stock with a few bug fixes and a few additional features. Check it out here
