I've successfully rooted and held root on three phones. Mine i manually updated with a zip file, second was girlfriends, third was my replacement. HDMI port was bad didnt know it. This one i rooted, zergrushed rooted, voodoo protected, temporaly unrooted-voodoo, took update, rebooted, restored root-voodoo.

Try using the MotoRecovery forced method of the OTA using the .zip floating around. That will give you a better error message.No, it just said update failed. :/
