I'm currently in my sophomore year as a Mechanical Engineering Student at University at Buffalo and have for a while been considering switching to Computer Engineering (not computer science). I was wondering if some computer engineers would be able to give me some insight as to what they do as a day to day job? Mechanical Engineering is interesting, but I don't see myself wanting to do it day to day when I graduate, however I am really interested in Computers and was considering taking the switch. Any thoughts? Everything is open for discussion

Personally I do everything, from running wire, building servers and computers, to security, networking, domain, email, web, the list goes on.. You will never be bored because usually you never have the same issue, unless of course its spam or virus, and your restoring windoze.. Like every job, there will always be things you do not like..

Well there is doing the job your degree is designed for and what you do with it.
I know several mech engineers who have these jobs which I think the mech engineer job is best for [robotics design (irobot), creating and designing animatronics (disney), structural manager(toyota)]
as for computer engineers, the jobs i see people with are [network administrator, programmers]
I think ideally, a computer engineer's high end job is computer hardware engineering such as working for AMD or INTEL or working on the Playstation. But i think like many degrees, the jobs which your degree is meant for, are usually very very hard to get so it ends up getting watered down. I would think if you do very well in school and can maintain a 3.75 gpa, you can get one of the coveted hardware engineering jobs. If not, there are still a bunch of good jobs such as programmers and network admins which CE majors fall back on and are highly sought out after for.
