Greetings,

I seem to have fried my phone, but before I replace it, I thought a question or two might be a good idea.

Something went wrong with trying to install safestrap on my Eclipse ROM. In the past I have successfully used RSD to recover back to stock (maybe 4 times) for other various self inflicted wounds.

This time however, nothing happens, after about 35-40 minutes, RSD is still on process 1 of 18. Using the command line instructions, I was able to get back to stock but every time I boot it brings up AP Fastboot Mode (S) (Flash Failure) etc...

I can power off, hold down both volume buttons press power and bring up the Boot Mode Selection Menu where I select Normal Powerup. It boots fine and I am back to the stock .744.

I tried the OTA update to .748 and about 1/3 of the way through it gets stuck for a minute or 2 then reboots and gives me a message that the installation failed. No error codes, just installation failed.

I have tried to RSD again, but I always get the same result. It sees the phone, connects and then will not finish step 1 of 18. It just sits there doing nothing while the RSD progress arrows go back and forth. Every power-off brings me back to the FastBoot menu where I have to switch to Boot Selection Menu etc...

It seems to run fine on the stock .744, but I would like to update.

I have not tried rooting to see if that would help as it seems like my problem is more bootloader related.

Any advice before I scrap this one and get a new phone?

Thanks,

Doug M.

Try Matts utility as your method of fastbooting, also check your computer to make sure its not the reason for the rsd failures. fast boot takes a great deal of effort from your PC. I got rsd failures because of my comp.

I know someone's going to post this so here:

Provide as many details as possible, we can help you get your phone back. There is no way (that I know of) to even touch your bootloader through normal flashing and the like.

Is you trying to fix your phone or not? I told you the same error happened with me and fastbooting fixed it. The problem is your method of fastbooting and your computer man.

Many thanks for the help. I tried Matts utility and it got me back in action.

Meanwhile, I called Verizon last night and they agreed to send me a new phone. I saw the warranty rant and could not agree more.

One of the few advantages of being older is that you have the ability to be a bit more charming and persuasive with the gentler sex. I was very candid with the agent at Verizon and after our brief troubleshooting, she decided to send me another phone free of charge even though I had clearly gone well outside the bounds of the warranty. I described at great length the process I went through of rooting, flashing etc… In addition to being mildly impressed with my technical acumen, she appreciated the apparently rare moment of self-incriminating honesty. The only other advantage of being a bit older is that had Verizon decided to not repair my phone as they would well be within their rights to do, I simply would have bought another one. Not fun, but not crippling either. It just makes being candid easier.

So now my phone is fixed and a new one is in route. I called Verizon again this morning and told them that I had somehow corrected the error and to cancel the shipment. Too late. It is on the way. So we agreed that I will simply refuse delivery and everyone will be happy. Verizon offered Customer Service above and beyond the call of duty and my phone is working again.

As a potential parting lesson from an old fart; "Let the truth be your friend". It is a philosophy that rarely disappoints.

This forum and the work shared here has provided me with many hours of entertainment as I break and then fix my shiny new Droid Razr. I made a donation to the board to express my thanks for all who serve our collective interests.

Thanks again for the assistance. I am almost certain to need it again…
