There was a member at XDA who also claimed you could revert from ICS to GB....

I Reverted from ICS 230 to GB so I could get back to official OTA. Just sayin....I was patient.

That's because the security on ICS wasn't upped until .235..that's why so many stayed on .232 until the OTA

Not at you. I just went off on rant from previous conversations. Sorry about confusion. You've always been nice when I've read your posts. I was sarcastic about buying me a phone.

Poor people can want stuff also. Like unlocked phones. Bills add up. Rich or gifted don't stress in current times. Food prices up, phone not what they want. Covered. Earlier somebody called Sam a dev. He knows people and is a good code writer. Develops tools to automate what others find. Damn good tools. No ROMs though or recovery maker.

I feel your pain in that respect - but, I'll definitely be budgeting money aside for developer phones that I'll plan to keep for at least a couple of years to justify the expense.

I apologize John

No worries m8 0 I figured you didn't know the whole story and I took no offense at your post.

^^^ this.  I was one of the first ones to actually take that .235 update and then try to force my system back to GB to prove that it could not be done whatsoever.  We knew the security in cdt.bin had been upped, but no one was willing to try - so I jumped up and tried.

Luckily, matt came up with a nice workaround for me to be able to reinstall the GB /system files while leaving the ICS Cdt.bin, kernel, etc. on my phone so it would allow me to then sideload the OTA again, b/c the OTA was fooled because of the manner in which it processes itself.  So I was only down for the better part of a single day.

It pays to be patient.

John, is the same or a similar exploit (fooling the OTA) possible on Jelly Bean, provided we could acquire root?

Kudos to you for jumping in the deep end & going for it. It truly helps out the community of testers.

I discussed it with SAM - you an fool it to take the update again to get out of a soft brick situation, but all the ICS builds were rootable, so that would not matter - with the ICS CDT.bin and kernels and the GB system the phone would not actually boot, so ther ewa no way t actually root the phone in that limbo state.

With JB, however, you cannot root natively (yet).  So, you could theoretically fool the OTA to take it, but when you put the JB CDT.bin on there, there is no actual reverting of the phone and thus no method to root, b/c the phone cannot boot.

John, I thought there was a way to revert to ICS Samuri had posted on another forum.  Perhaps this was what the person at XDA meant.

Not quite true. If you're on the ota already, you're stuck on JB. It had been possible to flash everything but a key file or two of JB which would sort of bypass the security check when you downgraded. But the special precaution had to be taken the first time you went to JB

Edit : the ICS to GB reversion on XDA was about a guy saying one could revert the builds >. 235 to GB. Those higher ICS builds had increased security like JB, so there was no going back

Correct.

If you are still on ICS, you can install JB while keeping the ICS version of CDT.bin - it gives you an unrootable JB, but allows you to revert to ICS whenever you want.  And as long as you do not let the JB CDT.bin get onto your phone, you can go back and forth all day long.  True, JB is unrootable (currently) via the FXZ, but you can still play with it and see if you like it or not....

However, if you've already taken the JB OTA / JB FXZ (including the JB CDT.bin), you're out of luck - no reversion is possible.

I'd rather not put my daily driver through it, but just like last time I can take one for the team and prove it in a video :D

Oh yes, I know you can't take the OTA and revert back.  It was the replacing of the JB CDT.bin with the ICS version method I meant.  Sorry I wasn't clear.  I was just merely curious if that was the method that had been referred to by that person on XDA.

No need to put a new os on your comp. Read the post all the way through. Then read it again.

You have a few choices -

1. LiveCD - boot from the disc and TRY Ubuntu - Does not install, just runs off the cd/dvd

2. USB - Install Ubuntu to a Flash Drive and boot from there - (listener preferred)

3. Virtual Machine - This is a program that allows you to install an OS into a virtual environment so you can have multiple OS's running - I like this method, but it is a  little more trouble setting up.

4. Install as a second OS dual boot.

5. Borrow someones Mac

6. Have a friend do it for you.......

Did I miss any ?

Dual boot Windows and Ubuntu? :)

I already had a 64 bit installation. Having read the thread I went ahead and did an update and then installed the 32bit stuff in OP for rooting JB, other than that I followed to a letter. (Well, twice, our public access at work had isolation, no bridge and ip's were handled by access point so nothing was on same domain, had to reconfigure that (clicked some boxes in openmesh cloud controller) then basically made directory again and continued with directions from there (guest, password, etc was already made).

you can visit either of the links below, the first one has all the information for the Linux exploit and I know Kaos, Sam and the other experts look at the thread and will offer help if you have a specific problem (but please, please read through the pages since it's quite possible that you question has already been asked/answered). The second link is for a method that uses a virtual Linux box under windows and should be about as easy as it can get:
