Curious which antivirus/mobile security apps are used by members on this forum.  I recently read this article

Avast has some interesting options for rooted users.  I've been running Webroot, and notice it's been dropped from recent free top performing apps.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

I've always used Lookout. Never had a bad experience. The app will back up contacts and a few other things (I can't remember exactly), it scans apps as soon as they are installed (Play Store downloaded or sideloaded) and it also can use a feature called "Signal Flare", which finds your phone's location before the battery dies, in case you lose the device and the battery dies.

That's some of the features I use, hopefully you'll try it if you haven't already.

I, too, use Lookout.  Not sure it's really needed but I do like the added peace of mind.  I've noticed very little (if any) degradation of performance and it stays out of the way.

I also use lookout. I think the issue with viruses and malware is somewhat overrated. I've downloaded thousands of apps and never came across one. I use lookout mainly for finding a lost/stolen device and being able to take pictures in the case its stolen (which is a somewhat recent feature that I suggested to them a while back so you can have picture evidence for the police in the case the person denies having it. Can't deny the picture evidence).

That pretty much sums up my reasons.  There are potential for viruses and zero day exploits but they've been not become a problem.  But the added features as you suggest are quite nice especially since it is free.

Lookout IMO has lived past it's prime and usefulness (except to find you're phone) personally I tried kasperkey but the paid version is needed to configure it to run out if sight. Also it's slow to verify apps trustworthiness (it checks against a cloud database that's always kept up to date. (lookout required an app update))

I've had Avast on my Bionic.  Wasn't too loading on the system and seemed to have some nice added features, but I never had to use them- thank goodness.

It was told to me by a good friend and I try to live to it. "if you are ever mindful if what sites you visit, what links you click, and what you download, you will most likely NEVER need a AV program." He's gone 7 yrs AV free and only one virus that was cause by someone else using his computer.

VERY TRUE !  I was actually after some of the other benefits of the app.  Remember when I dropped my Bionic off the tractor last year..... Yeah, locating it would have been a ton easier and I wouldn't have crushed it .....

Just curious as to why you think lookout has outlived its usefulness. I find that its becoming more useful. The ability to take pictures remotely and for people failing the lock screen is even more useful than it has ever been.

I should edit that to say it's usefulness as an AV

Also I have never needed to find my phone because it's always physically on me, or charging in my direct line if sight.

That was surely sound advice.  The only viruses I've experienced were on my laptop when I let my son download "free" computer games.  The free gift that kept giving me nothing but headaches and eventually a laptop that never truly recovered.  We were pretty shocked how devastating the viruses could be and it was a lesson learned.  Now that the kids visit Google play and assume this is a trusted site to download games, that fear still lurks I'll have another device that ends up in the graveyard because I didn't properly protect it.
