Update after doing some research it appears this problem is common if you store your phone in your pocket. Lint or dirt are blocking the connection some say paper clip, canned air-spray or even liquid contact cleaner to clean out while phone is shut off. I am going to try canned air first see if this work then paper clip and last resort contact cleaner I feel this order goes from least amount of risk to greatest. I will re-post my findings when I'm done.

Update squared_____ canned spray appears to have worked. But if this keeps happening  I guess I'll be going back to wireless headphones.

LOL I have to clean mine out at least twice a month. I just take a paper clip and gently get the lint out of there. Had to do it to my charging port too cuz my charger just kept falling out.

 "canned air-spray"

This may not be a good idea as whatever was causing the problem is now inside your phone.

Isn't the jack closed off to the rest of the phone?  So the lint has nowhere to go but out.
