I really want to start learning internals of the system. Guess starting with adb would be a start? Any ideas?

First you need to identify a glitch/security hole/exploit that will allow root access. Depending on how this is accomplished determines where you go to next, but in essence the second step is to protect they access you just made. Finally you implement a su control app to make it quick/easy to manage access.

To see more specifics, best bet would be to reverse previous root tools like motofail.
