Featured App: Orbot (Root Required)
Orbot is a free proxy app that empowers other apps to use the internet more securely. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt your Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world via the Tor Network. It was created by the Guardian Project, and designed to increase the anonymity of your activities on the Internet.
What you will achieve by using Orbot:
1) The ability to conceal your digital identity from the websites that you visit and other activities, when using certain other Android applications.
2) The ability to conceal your browsing activities and chats from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other surveillance mechanisms, when using certain other Android applications.
3) The ability to bypass Internet censorship and filtering rules when browsing with certain other Android applications.
How to Install Orbot:
Step 1. Download the app from the Google Play store.
Step 2. Read and confirm the permissions required by the app and install the app by tapping the Install button.
Setting it up for the first time:
Step 1. Tap Open to run Orbot for the first time.
Step 2. Choose the language that you want and tap Next
Step 3. A configuration wizard will appear with a description of the Tor project and Orbot. Read it and tap Next.
Step 4. A warning will appear on the screen. Read it and tap next.
Step 5. Sometimes a permission screen will appear, which will tell you if your device is not rooted and will ask you if you want to Orbot Transperent Proxy "superuser" features (see Advanced Smartphone Security

). In this guide we will not explore this option. If your smartphone is not rooted, just check the option that states I understand and would like to continue without Superuser. In order for you to benefit from Tor, you will need to use apps built to work with Orbot, or that support http or socks.
Step 6. A list of applications that work with Orbot will apear. Take note of them and tap next.
Step 7. Keep reading and tap finish.
Step 8. A big grey Orbot icon will appear. Now it is installed and configured.
How to Use Orbot:
Step 1. Tap and hold the Orbot icon in order to switch Orbot on or off. When it changes from gray to yellow as shown below.
Step 2. A text will appear to say that you are connected successfully to the Tor network. Click OK.
Step 3. **Tap and hold the green icon until it changes to grey, in order to switch Orbot off.
**Note: Browsing the internet anonymously
In order to browse the internet anonymously, You need to install a browser app which can route your communication through a proxy in conjunction with Orbot, and an instant messaging app which does the same. Please read the related Hands-on Guides for using Orweb and Gibberbot with Orbot.
