Hello,

A friend had bought a RAZR from Amazon when they had the phone for $0.01 for new contracts. Has stayed on stock roms and phone worked fine BUT the OTA updater had stopped working after the ICS update. Attempting to do a System Update would simply not work, pressing it would not provide any prompt and he assumed he was up to date.

So, I have a RAZR as well and am on JellyBean, he wanted to upgrade looked around and used the Batman ICS to JB update (found here:

). This caused the phone to screen to flicker with boxes at the bottom. We attempted to wipe and restore with the JB RAZR utility (found here:

). The phone reboots and during the load screen it looks fine but as soon as android fully boots it gets this screen issue. Its not a launcher issue as it does this in apps as well. :SADPANDA:

Attached is the picture of the phone.

TL;DR fone brok halp plz c pik kkthx!

Have you tried using RSDlite to reset your phone.... some have had success using that instead of the utility to get rid of the weird screen....

.... telekinectically tapped ....

I was under the impression that matt's utility was basically the same thing as using RSD phone tools.

Basically, it is.... but for some reason, some people have had better luck with it (as far as the weird screen)...

Well, thank you for the heads-up. I called him and he will be here in a few hours. I grabbed RSD5.7 and VZW 6.16.211 to try and reflash his phone.

Ill post back once we give it a shot.

That looks like one of the many times I have bricked my phone, lol. Just redo Matt's utility until you get it to boot correctly. There must have been done hiccup during one of the steps.

Hey guys,

I'm the friend with the diabolical droid razr.  I wanted to give an update on whats happened so far with this handset.

So we connected the phone and tried flashing the phone again with Jelly Bean using Matt's utility.  Same glitching screen issue.

Flashed the same firmware again using RSD lite.

Flash failed.

Flashed with an original 2.3.6 stock rom with RSD lite, and it booted but every service immediately started crashing on the phone.

Flashed with a different 2.3.6 stock rom with RSD lite, same crashing processes.

Found that we were using an old version of RSD lite.  Updated and tried flashing again. Same results,  4.1.2 failed flash, 2.3.6 roms have processes crash.

It's getting late, we decide to use Matts utiltiy again to get the phone running, albeit glitchy.

Flash failed... Low Battery

FRAK!

So I spent most of today learning to solder, and created my own Motorola Factory USB cable.  OMG, this cable is a disaster, but being impatient I connected the phone using the cable to my PC and after wiggling its position like a 80's TV antenna,  I got a connection, ADB Interface recognized.

I ran Matt's utility and with no fewer than 3 "Waiting for device" disconnects.  Installed the latest Jelly Bean ROM.

IT WORKS!

The motherfracker works!

Jelly Bean boots up, goes through setup and no screen spaz boxing or spliting.

I'm still not sure I believe its working.  I'd wager that my custom factory cable would likely set fire to the next USB device it touches.

But I digress.

Now I'm letting it charge and debating on if I push my luck with rooting.

Any opinions?

Hell.... you've come this far.... might as well root .... at least if you do then you can install safestrap and make a backup so if it gets messed up again you can fall back on it...... but I am confident in saying, if its working now, you should not have any other issues.... and you should be able to run the utility (or RSDlite ) again if needed to restore stock if you mess something up...:)

BTW I love the reference to the 80s television set antenna .... LOL aahhhh the memories :)

I figured the consensus would be to root it!

Unfortunately I have run into another problem.  The touch interface randomly misclicks or even multiclicks.  It's very inconsistent, but to give an example, when I was connecting to my wifi, I pressed "S" repeatedly on the keyboard and the text entered was SNMDISLLS

I can't figure out what would cause this or how to fix it.  I'm very hesitant to flash it again as a remedy. And I have restarted the phone multiple times.

I haven't searched out this issue yet and will after this post, however please throw some guidance this way if you know anything about this!

Ok, so I searched it out. Turns out a non motorola USB cable can do that.  Which is weird because I've used this cable for over a year and never saw that problem. I guess its unique to JB.  Charging off the motorola cable and everything works great.

I've also rooted the phone,  looks like it went smooth.  Paragon NTFS is working, gonna try some other apps.

Thanks for all the support guys!

Indeed a non OEM cable can cause any number of problems while flashing.... Rule of thumb.... for any device any manufacturer always use the OEM USB cable ;) some devices (especially our Motorolas) can be quite finicky at times :) Glad you are up and running now !!! :) .... telekinectically tapped ....

I definitely used the Motorola cable for flashing.  With the exception of the USB cable I modded into a factory cable.  After I had everything flashed and working, I plugged the phone into 6 ft long generic USB cable to charge, and thats when the touch screen issues showed up.  I didn't put 2 and 2 together at the time, and I still dont know how it makes sense, but it is what it is.

BTW here's a photo of the modded USB cable,  for posterities sake.
