Just got a RAZR M and finally was able to unlock the boot loader and root the phone with Motopocalypse and Droid RAZR M Util 1.20. Recently I heard that the next RAZR M factory update will have an impenetrable boot loader and be unrootable. I am now being pestered to install an update which I assume is this impenetrable one. If I accept this update will I lose root and be unable to reestablish access or will my root access be unaffected? If it will destroy my root capabilities, how do I stop the update pushes? Thanks to anyone in advance who can help with this.

freeze the updater.apk wth titanium to stop the notification. the update will not relock your boot loader, but you will loose root. to restore root you must reinstall twrp and in recovery it will ask you to restore root swipe yes

Is there any way to fastroot/RSD back to a previous iteration and unlock from there?

Shane I'm pretty sure you posted a link a while back that gave step by step instructions on how to go back to 4.1.2 pre OTA. I am unlocked and was rooted until I took the OTA of course. I remember reading it but now can not find the link to save my life. Could you do me a favor and repost it here.... and if it wasn't shane then does anyone else know what I am talking about? It was instructions on how to open a command window and manually flash back to a previous version. I hope you guys know what I am talking about and can hook me up..... Thanks in advance.

If your unlocked you just need to reflash a custom recovery. If you use twrp it will ask to restore root I'm not sure about cwm though but it would still be fairly easy

I figured it out.... what i was trying to do would not have worked as the phone needed to be able to boot up. I was stuck in a bootloop and tried matts utility 2 times to no avail. However i just ran it for a 3rd time and tada im back in action

For future reference when stuck in a bootloop hold volume down and power for about 10 seconds. The screen or led will flash or turn off then hold both volumes and power quickly. Should bring you to a menu the select what ever you need. Recovery or fastboot

I have the updater frozen. So far so good. But does that mean I will never have the 4.3 upgrade? Am I missing out on anything or will it have any adverse effects by never accepting upgrades for the rest of my phone's life? If so, is there a way to accept the upgrade without losing root? I am on a locked xt907 btw.

If we ever get 4.3 you wouldn't but if your on the older version unlock your bootloader and you'll never loose root. Well you will but when unlocked its easy to.regain root

My bad. I meant 4.2. I am still on 4.1 and I thought I heard that I will never be able to unlock.
