In the simplest terms, when you apply one of the ICS leaks from .84 on up, there are some changes made to the internal structure that can not be undone by the .173/.181 fastboot files. Thus certain files fail when applied and you are stuck with parts of .173/.181 and parts of .84/.85/.203/.204... depending on which file you upgraded with and which you are trying to downgrade to. Leaving you with an unusable device.

that makes complete sense, thanks, i appreciate it.

No, the recent leaks only have lte/cdma as a stock option. you have to use the phone info app to change to cdma only (3g) or use that #4 whatever code to do it. least that's been my experience.

That's odd. I only seem to getting 1x and not 3g while using phone info.

Yeah that happened to me with the cdma only option. If you switch to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) you should get 3G.

So to get this right, once this leak is flashed, you cant switch between 3G and 4G. The only option you get it CDMA/LTE ?? Right?

That's the only option in stock. you can use the phone info app to swtich between a multitude of options.

Ok. It was said that you should be able to upgrade straight from this leak to OTA. If i have to go back to gingerbread, is there a way to do that?

Actually it has been stated over and over that you must be on gb 181 to get the ota. There is no way back to GB.

You will need to download matts 1.7 utility and follow the steps he provides.

For what it is worth, i went up to 211 for a couple of days and decided to go back to 209 because 211 has issues and 209 runs perfect.

Not sure why you'd want to, but you will need to flash the system and preinstall from .181 and the boot.img from .209, have the .209 update on your sdcard, boot into stock recovery and install it.

My wife has a razr with .211 and she gets better reception than I do on my razr maxx with .211. I have heard that people have had better reception on .209. Please explain "flash the system and preinstall from .181 and the boot.img from .209. Do I flash them in safestrap or bootstrap? Do I flash them each seperately?

First, Razr or Razr Maxx makes no difference in signal strength. They are identical with the exception of the battery and case. Unless you have a hardware problem with your Maxx, your reception issue is most likely due to apps, data our settings. I'd try a factory reset before I moved backwards and off of the update path.
To answer your specific question though, you flash them with moto-fastboot in AP fastboot mode on the phone. No offense, but before you tackle this you'd better do some research. You may want to jump on chat and pick the brains there.
