Background:
* Current details
  -System 9.16.6
  -Android 4.1.2
  -Baseband VANQUISH_BP_100700.210.64.05P
  -Kernel 3.0.31-ge491d6d
  -Build 9.8.1Q-62_VQW_MR-2
* Phone is rooted
* Root saved with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper

* No Bloatware frozen or removed (that I know of...haha)
* Never flashed any custom ROMs or anything like that
* Bootloader Not unlocked
* Prior to attempting update, I did temp-unroot with OTA Rootkeeper (and verified, after a reboot, that it is indeed temp-unrooted)

First method:
First, I attempted the update the 'normal' way by going into Settings - About Phone - System updates, etc.
The update downloaded (and at that time, I saved a copy of it with OTA Snatcher, but didn't use it yet).
Then I told it to install, and it started its process, rebooted the phone, got to the update install place where the droid has belly open with spinning gadget, and progress bar below.
Then, shortly into that, it failed and showed the droid on its back with red triangle in belly.

Second method:
I copied the OTA to my removable SD Card, shutdown, then pressed power and volume up to get the recovery menu, chose recovery, chose to update from external, browsed to find the update, and selected it.
The update process started, but then stopped shortly into it, and gave the following error message...

assert failed: apply_patch_check("/modem/image/dsps.b01", "62d778c9c131d326314a621c07c83f773d0ae90e", "bf66bb5baa2113e35c766e77015f902b2fce9e1c")

Now, I have searched, and found a page with this same thing posted, but there's not much on it out there anywhere that I can see.

Does anyone here know more specifically what this particular error message means?

Any ideas on what I could try to get the update to work?

Thanks.

I believe that means the file it was expecting to replace does not match the signature it expects for that file. So you cant update. You need the correct files. At least thats what I believe it relates to.

I dont yet have enough knowledge on the HD yet since I dont have one. There was a discussion of the various OTA's and which version they are for. Since your MR2 that may be the issue.

Digg around on the Forum. Hopefully one of the others like SamuraiHL, responds.

UPDATE: I also have OTA Verifier installed, and just ran it. It told me that I have no frozen apps, but that it found 45 'failed expressions'. Of course, one of them is the one listed above that caused the update to fail.

Questions...

* What does 'failed expressions' mean?

* What can I do to 'fix' them?

* Can this have anything to do with my use of Gemini App Manager?
Now, I assume the answer is 'No', because I specifically made sure to not ever do anything to change stock bloatware apps or any part of the essential system,. However, I did use this app to change 'autostart' settings for many installed apps. I didn't think any changes I made to apps that I installed would have anything to do with system updates though. Any ideas?

Have you found a solution? I just tried to update my phone after unlocking it and the same thing happens.

Nope. I have tried again and again over the past month or so, and still get the same results.

I will probably just end up reverting to stock, and restoring my apps/data from backup, but I really don't like having to do that.

Maybe because the Droid gods are saying "UNLOCK THAT BOOTLOADER FIRST!" ;)

from what i have seen it will always fail after you unlock the bootloader, that's normal.

as long as your baseband updated to end in 15p you are good to go.

the files that made it fail are not important/needed.

you can bypass all the trial and error by using this utility

it wont update the trust zone files, so if you want the update and decide to unlock later, you still can.

The op stated in his original post that he hasn't unlocked the boot loader, so I don't think that's his problem, but that's good to know.

A lot of crazy info in this thread.  LOL.  First off, the OP's issue is that the file doesn't match the checksum that the OTA update has for it.  Meaning it was modified.  It will continue to fail until that's fixed.  But why bother with that nonsense?  :D  You can just use the House of Moto script I wrote with the KEEP DATA option and it'll do the update for you.  You'll need to re-root after and if you're locked you simply need to use motochopper 1.3.

Dude, I didn't even know you had 'House of Moto'.
I used your HOB to get my Bionic happy back in the day, but then, for some reason (getting old), I didn't even look you up for this issue on my Maxx HD.
Sweet!

As for the checksum....that's odd, because it's getting downloaded directly from them by their own system on my phone. I didn't change anything about the file whatsoever.

Regardless, now that I know you have a system for my phone, I will go get it today (probably not till after work) and report back this evening.
Thanks, man.

Yea, I don't use Moto phones anymore myself, but, I wanted to give one last gift back to the Moto community.  The HoM is universal...as long as you have an FXZ for your phone, the scripts can be made for pretty much anything you wanna do.  And the menus get dynamically created based on the scripts available for your chosen phone.  So in the case of the xt926, you'll have FULL, KEEP DATA, and UNIVERSAL scripts for RSD and fastboot [snapdragon].  Hit up the HoM thread for info.

What I'm saying is that the checksum of the file on your phone doesn't match what the update script in the OTA is looking for.  I hear you saying you didn't change it, but, something must have.  But if you use the FXZ with the HoM, it won't matter.

Yea, let me know how you make out.  Hopefully it should be fairly straight forward to do what you wanna do.

Doh!  :p
I went there, downloaded the HoM just fine  (  :)  )

but then I can't figure out which one of the 5 files I should download on this page...

Odd. If the phone alerted me to the existence of an update, and I clicked to let it download it, and it downloaded it, and then alerted me to the presence of the update and I clicked to allow it to install it, and the phone's own processes were the only things that touched it, I don't see how it could have been changed by anything.

Oh well....it is what it is (whatever that is  ).

Haha, I suspect that it is straight-forward, and that I'm just a bit crooked here.
Hopefully you can straighten me out as to which of the 5 files I need to use...

Get that.

Thanks. Got it.

Next...

1. what files to add to the root folder?
(sorry, man), where it says this...

"If root exists for your device, add the files to the root folder.  Make sure run.bat and/or run.sh exists."

...what files is it talking about?

My phone is rooted.
I see the root folder in the HoM folder, and everything else is placed where the instructions say to place it all, but I don't understand which files are supposed to go into the root folder.

2. run.bat/sh?
Also, I don't see a 'run.bat' or a 'run.sh' anywhere.

3. fb or rsd?
Then, once I have it all in place correctly, how do I decide whether I'm going to use fastboot or RSD?
Sorry, man....I've used yours and other utilities before, but I still don't understand it all well enough to know why I would want one or the other.

I know there are probably threads out there that would help get me less dumb.
Should I go there and get me some learnin, or can you give me a quick pointer......or just simply tell me what to do?

Oh, I forgot....
4. Where's the PayPal link/email?

Honestly I prefer when people do the reading so they can learn. Not a fan of spoonfeeding. You have to find the root exploit for the version that you're updating to. It's all well and good to say you're rooted but as soon as you pull the trigger on one of the scripts you'll be vanilla stock again. If you use the universal or keep data script then your data partition will remain but root will still need to be readded. I know root exists for this version since I updated dan's motochopper to work for it. You need to go find the thread for motochopper 1.3 and extract those files into the HouseOfMoto/root folder. Once you do that, the option to root will magically appear on the HoM menu. As for rsd vs fastboot it's a personal preference thing. Makes no technical difference which one you use.

I totally understand and agree. This is special though ( )
....totally kidding   :-)

Yep. I understood that I will lose root, and will need to re-root after this process. Thanks, man.
I think I'm pretty well set. I will give it a run tomorrow and report back...

One thing you should understand is that the HoM is not a "product". It's a framework. Think of it more like Lego blocks you can assemble. The existing scripts are simply what I threw together for each phone as examples. For most people that'll probably be all they ever need. But the beauty and power comes when you need/want a custom script. You just create it using the same format as the existing scripts (use them as a guide iow) and drop them in the appropriate folder. When you run the HoM the new script will automagically be added to the menu and ready to go. Get a new phone that isn't supported? Use the FXZ for your new phone and write your own scripts for it. Support done. This was my last gift to the moto community so I wanted to make it as useful as possible.

Very cool   ^^^^

Well, after your expanded and personalized instructions, I was able to get everything in the right place, did the update, and then re-rooted.
Thanks again, man.

Now, where's that PayPal link/address?
I don't have much to offer, but it only seems right that I'd give you a little something in appreciation.
