Interesting Drive Space issues

Best Answer cmh714 , 14 September 2013 - 10:52 AM

So I think we can close this one as a failed drive. SanDisk was good enough to replace it, should have it next week.

So in general I have a pretty good handle on how the drives, partitions, space is setup. But on certain Apps when they try to update from the Play store say insufficient space. This is on AviatorCM not that it should matter.

/system has 255MB free

/data has 342MB free

/sdcard has 20GB free (I have a 64GB sdcard and swapped internal and external in Settings)

/sdcard-ext has 1.4GB free

Currently as an example, I cant take the update to NFL Mobile (and others). Its a 22MB download which I think actually works, but when it goes to install I fail. It doesnt seem possible that a 22MB file would explode to larger than what I have available, but that is what seems to be happening.

Curious for thoughts?

maybe the system flagging as it would have too low of space (like when you try to shrink windows drive too far)

Anyone know where Play uses space for d/l and install, like as in the temp space it uses? I can move files around temporarily to make space, just need to figure out which area to do that in....in the meantime, I'll just keep searching :)

So i moved a SS slot from the internal to the external to see if the update would work, and it did not. Now when I go to look for the slot I moved, it has completely disappeared. Not sure how that happened, but its gone.

I think I need more space in either /system or /data but now I am a little nervous to move anything. fun fun fun

The fact that my folder with the data disappeared is bugging me. It happened last week too when I moved a photo from internal to external....and it was a funny photo too...

I pulled up on my m/c to a Security Conference at the beach of all places. In the Handicapped crosswalk was another m/c and I was think what an ass for blocking the handicap walkway.....I look at his license and sure enuf the mf'er had a Handicap license plate on his Harley...that should be illegal, I mean if you can ride a m/c, then how handicapped can you be?

Oh well, I'll just be backing more things to my PC in the future.

Seems odd you'd lose stuff when moving it to your external sd.  Unless I'm misunderstanding you.  Have you tried mounting it in Windows and running chkdsk on the card?  Something's not right.  That said, I've run into the not enough free space problem too.  I was running a deodexed stock rom for a long time.  Well, after many months, I ran into the same error.  It was odd because most apps would update and there was just a few that wouldn't.  Beautiful Widgets was one of them.  I think, can't say for sure, but think, it was a 12 MB download and I had around 250 MB's free (only a 1 gig slot).  Anyway, I was able to update other apps that were the same size or larger.  It made no sense.  To top it off, I was able to boot to another rom (way more free space available) and update it there.  Then, I backed it up with Titanium Backup and booted back into the problem rom.  Opened Titanium and restored the backup of the updated Beautiful Widgets and it installed fine.  Go figure.  I have no idea why it does this but, like you, I'd sure like to know.   :)

You did not misunderstand. On friday I moved a photo. On saturday I went to show it to someone and it wasnt in the folder with the rest of my pix where I put it, and it wasnt in the original folder either. It was very strange to say the least. Then like I said I moved a whole folder, thankfully of course I have a backup too, and it disappeared.

No, I havent bothered with looking at it through windows or any other OS and I havent tried any recovery tools either. TBH, its no big deal, I just found it odd as you have and thought others might have ideas or at the very least everyone should know this can occur. Hows that for a run-on sentence :)

The only time I personally have seen "disappearing " files is on a damaged or corrupt drive and have had to employ some data recovery tools........ is it possible that your micro SD is at, or close to the end of its useful life......

I dont think so John. Its a SanDisk and its not even a year old. But as I asaid i havent tried any Recovery tools since it really wasnt a big deal. Having said that, I may pull my card and see what there with some tools just because "we need to know" :)

Indeed...:) run the recovery tools :)
It will be interesting to try to find out why the file(s) are pretending to be David Copperfield....

honestly sounds like bad file mapping, recovery tools should find it. but it sounds like some weird quirk with SS and they way i (non-dev) think it works.

So after having some more issues along these lines, I think I have an idea of whats going on and its odd....

I tried backing up with TiBu. It complained that I have insufficient space. TiBu points to my sdcard which is a 64GB and has 20GB free. I went into TiBu and made it do a search across my device for the folder location. It found it at /storage/sdcard0 (which is my 64GB card). What was the curious/strange part is it said the drive was not writeable. I went into Root Explorer and sure enough that folder was not mounted RW for some reason. Now for the kicker.....the symlink /sdcard was mounted RW.

I am pretty sure that a symlink cant be RW if the underlying folder its linked to is RO.

So not sure why I am not mounting properly sometimes. In this case, I rebooted and its fine again.

So since I am swapping phones and wanted this drive in my new one, I have been trying very hard to get this thing working and it does appear that somehow the drive is corrupted. It looks like I am deleting files but they are still there. I have tried utilities from Mac, Linux and Win. Some appear to look like they work but when I look at the drive the files are still there. Others just fail with various messages.

The drive is a SanDisk Ultra 64GB and is less than 8 months old. I have an email into SanDisk, since the drive has a limited lifetime warranty, so I will see what they say and report back in. Would kind of suck if I had to eat it. And then not sure if I should buy another one.......

You could use a utility such as diskpart (in windows) to completely clean and re format, re partition the SD card.... its never failed me :) ....

So after many, many hours of trying different things, this drive is fried. I submitted a ticket into SanDisk support, and from their reply it appears as if they are willing to replace my drive. Stay tuned.
