If I update to the Ics will I be able to get on the gsm network?? If yes, How do I do this?

The XT912 from Verizon here in the US is CDMA but is a Global ready phone. We can take out the Verizon SIM and buy and put in a SIM while in a foreign country to get GSM working.
There are also patches for the CDMA ROM's to get GSM working.
But yes, the global capability came in ICS so at the very least you would need to update to that
