Check background data in data manager. When background data is disabled, google will not sync

When it is blue, means your google account is synching.

That's all on. 4g turns blue almost instantly. It's only when it's on 3g only that this issue occurs.

Bad 3G radio? Have you tried reflashing the leak?

Yes, did it twice. Actually re downloaded it then reflashed it just in case the first one was somehow corrupted.

Might be a hardware issue.

I've been on .211 for a while. Switching back and forth from 4G to 3G only with no issues. 3G stays gray for a while after the switch, but blue does show up. And everything works. Are you switching to CDMA only or CDMA auto (PRL)? I used the "auto" one.
cdma auto (prl)

So I decided to just leave the 3g on to see if it eventually turned blue and it does. Averages 3:26 minutes to turn blue (timed it 3 times). 4g turns blue in under 10 seconds....Weird huh?

Hmmm, I have not had any issues, but I nuked all my data (multiple times) going through .181 to .211, so I was starting completely fresh. And I was very selective in data restore for user apps with none of system app restores. I can only tell you that on clean slate I have no data issues with 4G/3G switch, but I know that's not helping you much. Did you try a factory reset with absolutely no data restore and see if the switch works for you then?

I've wiped my cache, dalvick, factory reset, nose, and butt in an attempt to get this working right with no luck.

I have the OTA .211 since Friday evening (soak test) and I have noticed the same thing. Unfortunately they have taken the CDMA only option away so now it is GSM, LTE or Global settings. But to the point...I live in a marginal 4g areas so the phone is constantly switching back to 3g and it does take a long time for the 3g to reestablish a data connection.Ok, so I have been going nuts trying to figure this out. I was on .209 with no data issues at all. I jumped up to .211 (twice) and I have this problem: I like staying on 3g only to conserve battery. On this .211 leak, the 3g does not turn blue. I get internet, but google play is AFU while on 3g only. 4g works perfectly. Anyone else have this problem? is there a fix?
