First of all, thanks for reading this thread!  I am kind of in a bad spot with my phone.  There was a picture that was accidentally deleted off my phone (I believe it was on the internal memory) and now I need to get it back.  I have searched high and low and basically I have come up short on everything.  This is my first post on this forum and it looks like this website will be my best bet to get an answer (hopefully!)

I hate the fact that motorola did away with USB mass storage in JB.  This wouldn't be a problem at all if they didn't.  So my questions are:

Is there any way you guys know of to put my phone in a USB mass storage mode?  This way I can scan the internal memory with data recovery software and get my picture back.

If this is not possible, then second question:

Is there a working root for my phone?  I am running 4.1.2 with system version 9.18.94 and it is stock.  From what I have read so far, I cannot unlock the bootloader.  I don't care if I can unlock the bootloader or not.  I just want my phone rooted so I can run the Disk Digger app to scan the internal memory on my phone and get my picture back.

If you guys have any other suggestions on how to scan my internal memory on my phone (basically it has to be assigned a drive letter in windows in order for it to work) then I am all ears! I would be willing to scan it in windows, or in an app that somebody knows of.  Either way I cannot scan it with the ridiculous MTP protocol that motorola is now using.  It HAS to have a drive letter to work.  Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into rooting these phones! I hope I can get an answer to my problem!

Not to be the bearer of bad news but there is no root for your version and no way to implement mass storage.

You could try this -

The only thing is the more you use your device the less likely you can recover

After all the reading, I'm beginning to believe I am out of luck. No root (as of now) and way to implement mass storage. Thanks for the app livinginkaos but it was a no go either. I would be willing to brick my phone so long as I could get that pic off but I just don't see any way possible.

Have you done the qualcomm settings thing?

Use a program like anycut to make a shortcut to qualcomm settings (or qcomm settings, the icon is a blue q on a white square). Open the shortcut and there should be an option to enable USB mass storage in there.

In Nova Launcher (Should be similar for others/anycut):

Shortcuts->Activities-> com.android.qualcomm->qualcomm settings

I can't vouch that it works, but the setting is there. I've never tried it.

Moonrakerone, I followed your suggestion and checked the box for USB mass storage. However, when I plug my phone into the computer, there is no option for USB mass storage and my computer still uses the MTP protocol.

I can't see that the qualcomm settings in Nova Launcher actually do anything.

Unfortunately I saw the same to be true when I just tested it. Sorry to give false hope :(

I believe as of 4.2 or 4.3, USB Mass storage mode has been removed. Some phones and tablets never had it (Nexus 7 comes to mind as one that never had it if I remember correctly).

MTP is supposed to be "safer" than USB Mass Storage. It doesn't lock the storage from the phone when accessing it from  your PC. It supposedly does all sorts of checks as you write and read from it, hence reducing the possibility of corrupted files, especially if you unplug it.

But, the downsides are it's slower than USB Mass Storage mode and I find it to be very flukey. Sometimes it won't let me manipulate files on my device from the PC. Othertimes, it doesn't show all the files, even though I know they are there!

I prefer USB Mass storage myself.
