I'm on rooted 211 and it pulls up the new new style voice search, repeats what I ask it aloud, then force closes.

The thread on xds says it only works fully on AOSP roms still.

That's an old thread. Look at the link in the OP. Sounds like you didn't assign proper permissions to the apk. Or, do you have decent signal to access the web?

The link for google now isn't working. I have "voicesearchforgooglenow.apk" and the velvet file I rename but not the google now app itself.

The Velvet file IS the Google Now app.

^^^ what Hicks said...
The velvet file is the Google Now app, replacing GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. This is the file to which you need to give read/write access.

The voicesearchforgooglenow.apk allows you to use Google Now voice search successfully. The original ICS voice search app did not work with Google Now, remember?

I can't seem to find the widget though :( for now I have a resized Google search bar and a voice search app icon but I would like to get an actual widget going :)

OK. I figured out what is gong on.

You have to say the command and then hit enter. (It looks like a regular google search but does other things.)

Here is a thread that gives you samples of things you can try out with it.

It doesn't answer you vocally. It simply repeats your question when you voice search. Hopefully, it will be improved to carry on a conversation like Siri.
