How can you not know if your phone is rooted or not? Either you rooted it or you didn't unless you purchased it used off eBay. If you got it directly from Verizon, then it's definitely not rooted.

Install root checker from the playstore.

Not necessarily.  When you open SuperSU does it complain that the binary is out of date?  And if you try to update it, does it fail?

Hence, this is why you cannot take an OTA. You have to flash yourself back to a stock, unrooted, unmodified system.

First off, you might want to see if you can unlock your bootloader if it isn't already unlocked. As long as no one patched it to 9.18, you might be able to unlock it.

Try that first BEFORE applying any OTAs. You might even already be unlocked. Follow the instructions in the first post in the thread I just linked to and see what happens. If you are successfully unlocked, then you'll definitely be able to go back and forth between Kit Kat and JB and you'll have more options as more custom ROMs come out for the official Kit Kat upgrade.

If you can't unlock it, no harm no foul, but if you upgrade to Kit Kat, then you are stuck there with a locked bootloader.

If you are on a locked bootloader, you'll have to obtain the same FXZ version that you have and use SumariHL's House Of Moto tool to flash it back to stock 9.16.

You can get the full FXZ image from here ->

You want the firmware version labeled as Blur_Version.9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US to go back to what you had. Do NOT flash anything after that or you will lose the ability to unlock your bootloader if it hasn't been unlocked yet AND if no one else has flashed a later version. Once it's unlocked, if you can do that, then you can flash any version and it will stay unlocked from there on out. You won't lose the unlocked bootloader.

SamuriHL's HoM tool is here ->
