Okey so, idk if anyone discovered this yet but i was digging through the cyanogen source in their advance settings and found what toggled the navigation keys in a rom.

Most devs are making flashable zips to enable soft keys... no need to...

In your build.prop, enter the following line...
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0

0=enable
1=disable

So really knowing this, devs can enable a toggle in the the power menu or their own toolbox.

Do we know if this disables the harware keys?? Or is there another edit for that. I ran a rom that had softkeys and the hardware keys were still enabled. That seemed weird to me...

Awesome find though...

The only way I've ever accomplished this was through XML edits in system UI (iirc). I didn't think it was as easy as a build.prop edit but hey if you're right, thanks for the easy find!

You can try the build prop tweak I always make the zip- only way to change size and I'm not sure if the build prop tweak will open the navigation bar menu in settings

Well yeah your going to need to edit the xml for size and which buttons to appear, however, this line allows users to easily disable and enable the nav bar via a build.prop editor. Gotta make things easier on the folks.
Ofcourse this tweak useless on aokp builds with the nav bar toggle option and tablet ui enabler.

Thanks for the tip! Finally saw this and did it. Now all I need to do is make a transparent status bar and make the navbar transparent and I'm ready to go.

I like how it leaves the hard keys still working and they still light up. :-)

I can confirm this works, I booted into recovery and enabled my stock rom, put the build prob edit in, rebooted and they work perfect. Perfect size..

One option is an app called AdjBrightness. Can lock off key lights.
