Thanks.

Still wondering if its Really OK to just delete that line in the xml file? Why would it be there if not needed/causes errors?

Yes it is OK to remove ALL lines (I think there are two) containing getvar from the xml. In fact, you have to or you will get the error you're having.

There was just one line to be removed, so I removed that and flashed apparently successfully. The phone rebooted, and eventually I disconnected it though RSDlite was still complaining that closing the program could damage the device.

Play store seemed to be having trouble loading, but rebooting the phone seems to have fixed that too.

Got to thank everyone for the help!

Of course now I'm wonder whether I should update to kitkat, etc, etc

Glad to see it up and going.  I would give it a couple days of use with the new flash before upgrading just to make sure you have got everything working, ie gps, service and signal etc. Also do a search via google about proceedures to make sure the bootloader is or can be unlocked.  I have used the U.S. Verizon xt-926 for a few years but I have never been hands on with the Global International version which you have. I use TWRP backup to do nanoid backups on all my devices.  It beats having to reload all the apps etc if something goes wrong.

If you plan on using custom ROMs I would upgrade to KK, only because there is a bit more variety available. Glad you're up and running though! :D

Many thanks again for all your help.

I did do a data backup recently, so trying to figure out how to do the restore - would help if I could remember which app I used in the end :-)

Well I managed to restore most of my data - sadly for some reason my Tasker profiles didn't back up, so will need to reprogram them (I can code them better a second time anyway!)

Does flashing the ROM above change the baseband version? I am asking because I had no reception on 2G when I moved away from my home area (3G) - however my carrier (O2) was reported as having problems nationally, so unclear where the problem lay.

Well apart from O2's national problems all seems to be working well!

As a further bonus, having upgraded to 4.1.2 with the flashing I did to recover the phone, I checked today on about phone/system updates and it was offering me an OTA update to kitkat - so I've just upgraded to 4.4.2 :)

Ant to answer my own question (above), the baseband version Has changed on upgrading to KK.
